This Week in Bradenton: Plenty of debuts this week in Palm Beach
Palm Beach and Bradenton debut plenty of new faces this past week
It was a busy week in Palm Beach regarding roster transactions, as the Cardinals’ activated quite a few of their 2024 draft picks, including their first-round selection, JJ Wetherholt.
The Marauders also welcomed a few new names, although from their FCL team and not their most recent draft.
Yordany De Los Santos, Jhonny Severino, Zander Mueth, Greiber Mendez, Noah Takacs, and Clevari Tejada were all called up from the Complex last week. Tejada, Mueth, and Severino will all be making their Single-A debuts, with Yordany playing last year and Mendez seeing Bradenton previously.
It was a rough week for Bradenton overall, which dropped the last five after winning the first game.
Javier Rivas had a strong week, going 5-14 with three runs, two home runs, and four runs driven in. Shalin Polanco went 5-21 with three doubles, and Braylon Bishop picked up four hits with two RBI.
Strikeouts were a big issue for De Los Santos in his first stint in Single-A, and he was able to address that, at least for now. In 19 plate appearances, he didn’t strike out at all, walking three times. He also picked up four hits while driving in three runs and stole a base.
Severino struggled a bit more, going 3-15 with a double and six strikeouts.
Omar Alfonzo struggled, going 3-23 with seven strikeouts. Esmerlyn Valdez only had three hits in 16 at-bats, two of which were home runs.
On the pitching side, they got a boost in the return of Michael Kennedy, who threw three innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.
Mueth struggled with his control, walking four in two innings pitched.
The best pitching performance of the week went to Anthony Solometo, who pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk while also striking out a hitter.
Tejada pitched twice, including on Sunday. In total, he allowed four earned runs in six innings.

I was one of those who really hoped that Javier Rivas would turn the corner this year, but just another bad year. He is in his age 22 season and is completing his second year at Lo A, where he has had more than 500 PA's. He's huge and can hit prodigious BP HR's, but he strikes out as much or more than anyone in the system! His K/BB this year was 105/14. He is an excellent fielding SS, but it would be hard to think he could do better at the plate in Hi A.
