Overview
Yulie fits a template that’s becoming more and more common for RHPs. He has a strong arm and very good stuff, but has struggled with his command. The Yankees tried for four seasons to develop him as a starter, but the command issues remained. After he missed the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, they moved him to the bullpen. Early in his career he threw 94-98 mph, touching triple digits. By 2022, though, his fastball was averaging 93. There’s no data available to show for sure whether moving to the bullpen has helped his velocity, but at least one report had him back to the upper 90s. Yulie’s big pitch has always been a slider that he throws much more often than his fastball. He occasionally throws a change that doesn’t appear to be very effective. The Pirates signed Yulie to a minor league deal for 2026.
2019-24
Yulie made his way to high A in 2023, putting up very similar numbers most of the way. The exception was his DSL debut in 2019, he had a 6.46 ERA despite a 1.73 WHIP with low walk and K rates. After missing the pandemic season, he went to the Florida Complex League to open 2021, but the Yankees moved him up to low A after three outings. He had a rough time after that, with an ERA of 8.89 due largely to a BB/9 of 8.3. He did have a K/9 of 11.8.
Yulie returned to low A in 2022 and got better results, with a 4.97 ERA and 5.7 BB/9. The Yankees moved him up to high A in 2023 and, still working as a starter, he had an ERA of 4.56 and BB/9 of 4.9. He fanned 10.3 per nine innings. He missed most of the last two months of the season, though, and also all of 2024.
2025
In 2025, Yulie returned to high A and made 36 appearances out of the bullpen. He was a little less effective than in 2023, walking 5.7 per nine innings and posting a 5.50 ERA. He fanned 10.3 per nine.
After the 2025 season, Yulie became a free agent and signed with the Pirates.
