Undrafted Luke Scherrer put a solid 2024 season together in the Complex
An undrafted signing, Luke Scherrer had a solid debut year in 2024 with the FCL Pirates
The Pirates team in the Florida Complex League had quite the season. They made it to the Championship but lost to the Tigers.
They were led by their infield, which featured Carlos Caro, Yordany De Los Santos, and Jhonny Severino. Zander Mueth was named Pitcher of the Year, and David Matoma made the FCL All-Star team as a reliever.
Plenty of names were getting recognition, and that’s not even factoring in the massive Tony Blanco Jr., who is hard to miss on a baseball field.
So, it’s not overly surprising if a player went a little under the radar among that group.
It’s even more the case since Luke Scherrer was an undrafted free agent, where some of the previously mentioned group were either higher bonus signings from the international market, high draft picks, or acquired in notable trades.
Regardless, Scherrer put together a solid 2024 season in the FCL, hitting .273/.406/.345 (118 wRC+) with eight doubles and nearly as many walks (18) as strikeouts (21) in 139 plate appearances.
A catcher when signed, his playing time was nearly split behind the plate (130 innings) and first base (125.2). It’s worth mentioning that Scherrer had to compete with playing time with Richard Ramirez, so it’s not like it was due to poor play at catcher.
He also got a couple of games in right field.
Though he hasn’t quite reached legitimate prospect status yet, he has shown signs of having a solid hit tool. He didn’t hit for much power last year, which isn’t a complete surprise for players in the FCL, but you would certainly like to see more than eight doubles.
He’ll turn 20 in December, so a jump-up to Bradenton shouldn’t be out of the question. That will give us a good idea of where he stands as a prospect, but he’s a super under-the-radar guy to monitor in 2025.
