BA picked Pirate lefty Reinold Navarro as having the best fastball at the DSL All Star Game.

"When it was in the zone, the pitch had plenty of angle and plane along with velocity that sat around 93-94 mph and touched 95. He paired the heater with a short-breaking slider in the low 80s. He finished his day with a pair of swinging strikeouts. Both came against 95 mph fastballs, one elevated and one running away from a lefty."

Good video. Navarro was all over the place on the first couple hitters, then after a mound visit was really nasty.

Pretty sure he pitched in that one streamed game they did between the two DSL teams and he was fairly impressive there. Don't like going solely by numbers in the DSL but after seeing him and then hearing this, it's good to hear. Dariel Francia was another I was interested in whose having a good year at 17, and got to see a couple of innings from him the other week.

So that's two more pitchers to watch going forward.

Any velo on Carlos Castillo today?

That last pitch he threw in the third was a slider, 13 inches of horizontal break, 2800 rpm at 80 mph.

the slider has potential.

91-94 mostly. Most of the 91s have been in the 3rd inning here. the change-up, when he's controlling it, looks nice, just needs to take some spin off it.

Love hearing reports like this. Would love even more to hear some good reports on some good bats but will take what we can get

Termarr with a 15 game hitting streak. Unless he’s part of a Luis Robert deal, you’d have to think he and Bubba are the only true untouchables in the system

Termarr had a very good ST this year and the Pirates rewarded him with being sent back to A+. To me, that did not inspire the athlete, but instead introduced doubt in his mind about what this organization planned for him. I think his numbers indicated as much for the first few months of the season, and I am glad he is posting numbers now like he should have all season.

He is the reason I would not get too comfortable with any of the guys ahead of him at 2B such as NG or Bae. If he posts some good numbers at AA, he is a real possibility for being at 2B in late 2025 or early 2026. As such, he is untradeable in my estimation.

I think he is a mentally tough and confident kid. I think NMR mentioned it, that you can't waste at bats or take time off in the field. Termarr in spring training said the thing he needs to work on most is his focus. My guess he was focused playing with major leaguers, but then it was a big drop off in the minors. He is what 19 and learning on the job. I am surprised though, that he started so low and is still there.

Every single year there's articles written about all the veteran major league bats - with years of track record as above average hitters - that have gotten off to slow starts yet we lose our damn minds when it happens to a 19 yo prospect.

This is baseball, fellas.

Statement game right there for Thomas Harrington.

Backed up double digits, but this time against the 2nd best offense in the league. Same lineup the shelacked Bubba last night.

Burrows, Ashcraft, and Harrington to round out the rotation next year shewwwww.

Oviedo coming back next year too. If he shows not much drop offf…….😁

The little I saw at Pirate City this spring, I chose Harrington as my sleeper pick. I guess I can't really use the word sleeper with him anymore.

Any word on Jun Seok Shim?

Nope. Obviously not gonna see him this year.

I'll admit, I do not pay any attention to prospects until High A, and really only deeply at AA. So, for those who are following the lower levels, are we seeing pipeline movement over the last 3-4 years? By the time they get to AA, where they came from is often lost to me. We hear about DSL and FCL but is there a good transition path or do they mostly peter out? Is there a ROI on the lower levels, or are we mostly getting actual prospects from the draft?

Almost exclusively from the draft since the slug of teardown trades have busted or matriculated to the show

Maybe the Somerset ballpark radar gun was off, but Harrington was registered at 96 for one pitch i saw

Not all of his pitches on the broadcast registered, so u didn’t get a reading on all of them. So he may have hit 96.

Ballpark guns are weird. Went to Richmond the year Luis Ortiz was in Altoona, and he had multiple pitches they registered in the 20s, which I knew that wasn’t right

96 would be even better to see

Is it just me or does the DSL Gold team always seems like the more advanced/older player team?

It seems like most players will start on DSL Black then move to DSL Gold their second season. Unless they are more advanced player or a prominent signing then they sometimes start on DSL Gold.

I feel like it was flipped the other way last year, but regardless, yea one team always feels like it has the more advanced players on it than the others.

Yeah, I’ve noticed this. Seems like you’d want a mix.

Maybe it's a learn by example plan. Put the guys that they think will be most successful on one team and that success breeds more success. Then anyone on the other squad that shows promise move them over or up.

Expand full comment

Ok, you are probably right. I thought the DSL Gold team was the good one last year too and thought, Jauregui for example, played for the Black last year and then moved up to the Gold this year?

Probably nothing though. They probably just pick the players team based on the coaches, their positions and amount of PT they are excepted to be given, etc.

I feel like I remember Dreker saying something like that on Twitter. So you may not be too far off.
