Contreras was transferred to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he introduced a new sinker.
Contreras threw his sinker twice in the first inning on Aug. 10. His first sinker registered at 89 mph with 1952 RPMs, a 23-inch vertical break, and a 15-inch horizontal break.
On the next pitch, Contreras threw the sinker again, registering at 88.9 mph, 2010 RPMs, a 27-inch vertical break, and a 17-inch horizontal break.
The second sinker resulted in a weak groundout from Patrick Dorrian to first baseman Malcom Nuñez.
After his three innings of work, Contreras ended up throwing seven sinkers. Contreras had two out of the seven sinkers put in play and averaged 74.1 mph in exit velocity.
The only thing I'm worried about that is some of the 'sinkers' actually favored a change-up more when it comes to the metrics. 27/17 break on it, with a spin rate like that I would tend to believe is actually a change-up and not a sinker.
Either way it's good to see him trying to use something other than his fastball/slider.
Yea I remember his start in Bradenton it listed him with a 'sinker' then I think it either updated, or it just became clear those were change-ups. I haven't heard anywhere about him specifically using a sinker. I was chalking those up to being changes at this point. But idk. Savant has been weird lately.
I mean, he is a college hitter playing in Single-A. He came from a smaller school but still, there is probably a certain expectation that he should have some success here, but it's also not a guarantee.
not overly concerned with the recent pitcher draftees and their control (not now anyways). pirates haven't had time to implement any changes they want. i'd wait until next year to see any potential improvements in their control
They really seem to lack all purpose and direction in the development of pitching. I'm not convinced that there is a single legitimate pitching coach anywhere in the organization.
This will be a fun week to have Bradenton back on stream. Obviously we get to see Paul Skenes but also I was big on Jaden Woods and now Patrick Reilly's fastball has me intrigued a bit.
80 grade across the board. Substack actually has a report on how active subscribers are. So, we can see who is the most active on here and what not lol.
Pirates released Owen Sharts and Sergio Umana. Not trying to be mean, but that'll make Marauders' games a bit easier to watch.
That's shitty

Do we even have confirmation that he's throwing a sinker yet?
Velo, spin, and movement are essentially replicates of the few changeups he's thrown.

Right on Anth, thanks.
severino didn't last long before he was injured
Where do you see that?
haven't seen him play in awhile, so i looked at the fcl pirates roster. lists him on the 7 day IL
😡😡😡
WTM….Don’t forget Macadooooooooooo!! Or are you just considering pitchers? Jebb has also gotten off to a fast start.
He was not on my bingo card as draft picks to hit the ground running like he has lol
How long will it last, tho? We’ve seen similar movies before.

Remember Matt Curry? Back then, I thought he’d be the next big thing. Eddy Furniss was another.
Yeh. We know all about college hitters doing poorly in A ball, unfortunately.
Great job, guys!!!👍

*cue jokes about pirates developmental coaching
Checking last year’s draftees won’t brighten your day.

ya the draft definitely injected a bit of life into the minor leagues...for me anyways. more players to follow!
watched reilly's appearances. mostly fastball/cutter. some good strikeout stuff. really hope they can reign in his wildness though
Fastball metrics from his first outing were encouraging, waiting for it to update with the second, which on paper, was better than the first.
Your last line ruined my posting a very funny comment about our lousy coaching. .
heh heh heh
Excited for future advanced metrics articles!
Got one tomorrow that kind of introduces some stuff while also breaking down someone in the system. Video and analytics.
I wonder what MY metrics look like?

That can be a good OR bad thing, tho. :)
It's good because I can actually see if my girlfriend reads everything I write like she says she does lol
