Overview
The Pirates drafted Giles as a line-drive hitting prep outfielder. At this stage, he’s hit over power, going mostly gap to gap, although he’s shown over-the-fence power in workouts. It’s possible with adjustments he could add power. His speed is maybe a little above average and he should play center at least initially, but there’s some risk of him being a tweener, not quite enough speed for center or enough power for a corner. His arm is at least a little above average; he threw in the mid-90s from the mound prior to a sore elbow in his senior year. Baseball America ranked Giles 135th among draft prospects, MLB Pipeline 157th. He had a commitment to Oregon, but signed for well above the slot amount of $725,900.
