The good: Cruz bounces back from an early error to produce a 5-hit night, including driving in go ahead run in 6th inning.

The bad: Colin Holderman looks like he expects something bad to happen to him. Giving up runs every outing of late appears to have shaken his confidence.

The Ugly: Allowing first 5 batters to score. MLB record 15 total bases to first 4 hitters. Ortiz has to go back to pen after this performance.

Should that have been an error on Cruz? Throw was a little off but gold glove 3rd baseman has to have that and then to act with no urgency allowed the run to score.

Just hoping Holderman keeps his statistical season just respectable enough to maintain his trade value…

I disagree with the last part. Ortiz has had six starts I think. Both of his bad starts have been against Arizona. The other four starts? He’s allowed two runs in 24.2 innings. Give him some rope. Besides, who else is chomping at the bit?

The bullpen has reverted to its early season form where you expect each guy coming in to be a bit worse than the last. It’s difficult to overcome if they all slump at once.

Wouldve been a season defining win, couldve been a season defining loss. I hope its not though

Need to go 33-21

Sometimes you have to credit the other team. This D-backs team has been on fire offensively for over a month. The second Bell homerun was insane. Marte is a beast. This matchup is very difficult because of how good this offense is. Shutdown pitching is tough but necessary to beat them and even then their bullpen will improve after the deadline despite a few hiccups here at first. If Arizona can straighten out their starting pitching they are a scary team if they make the playoffs.

Sometimes you do but we have 21 losses left to stomach if we want to make the playoffs.

In the end too many gofer balls. Get em tomorrow.

You know what they say. The solo shots don't hurt you..... unless you give up 5 of them.

They fought hard in a game it looked like they had no shot in after the 1st. Got our aces on the hill in the next 2 let’s go

Hate that we lost, but love the way this team competes. Get after em tomorrow...

especially Ortiz after his start, and Cruz after his rough night.

Exactly. Ortiz showed us something tonight. Big time learning experience for a young pitcher.

That's why it was a good idea to leave him in the game.

This Pirate team cannot afford to score 8 runs and lose. This one’s on the pitching.

Unfortunately, the Dbacks averaged almost 7 runs a game for the month of July, easily best in all of baseball. Still on our pitching.

That sucks

I just know we're gonna get one run back, threaten for a 2nd, and have Hayes hit into a DP.

Please don't let me be right about that...

Given the way Santana's pitched in July, seemed like a decent bet he'd do OK.

I had put Ketel Marte in roughly the same silo as BRey as a very good offensive player. But damn, he's having himself a year.

July for Santana. 14 innings, 1 earned run, 0 homers, 22 strike outs

Realized that I was blacked out by the ever-wise MLB folks because I'm in Utah. Utah is blacked out for ARI games and COL games.

I'd love to see Yorke replace Triolo, assuming IKF takes Williams' roster spot. AZ is getting offense all up and down the lineup. The Pirates still have their black holes.

Expand full comment

The Pirates could certainly use another bat, but by scouting reports Yorke is not good defensively. Their biggest black hole all year has been center field and, despite Taylor’s impersonation of a hitter in Houston, they still don’t have one.

Yes the D backs are a real good hitting bunch. Unfortunately better than our guys right now.

At some point Holderman has to cede this role to Chapman or Nicolas. He's serving up more meatballs than Mario Batali
