1. Triolo can hit. He hit .298 last year for the Pirates in 180 at bats which was the best on the team. That was the very best on the team. The next best we had was .271.
B. Maybe Triolo can't hit as an everyday player, but can hit as part time players. You see this a lot in baseball.
3. It is not always the best in the long run to keep shuffling guys up and down from the minors. We just lost Roansy that way and have lost several young guys because there is not enough room on the 40 man.
4. Triolo is a good fielder at multiple positions which gives the Pirates more flexibility what to do everywhere else.
On the Chicago station, they were joking about Alzolay went on the IL and by the way he sucks right now, out of options, but don't want to release him.
They would still owe him the $3.2M no matter where he played, but I think he has enough service time to refuse a trip to the minors after being DFA'd and could become a FA. Ethan could probably confirm if he's around.....
This is another time when the cost of Shelton's catering to Tellez gets hidden. Fleming was bad, the defense was bad, but with most of the lineup having good days, what if Tellez' standard oh-fer wasn't right there in the middle? Maybe it'd be 10-6, or more.
And bunting runners over just to try to help Tellez get an RBI is stupid beyond belief. And of course didn't work. Shelton is easily the dumbest manager I've ever seen.
I'm cool with anything that gets Tellez out of there. He's a travesty. And if Bednar blows it, he'll get blamed, but I'd blame Tellez and the idiot manager.
No matter what happens, Tellez will keep playing so they can try to ditch a little of his salary at the deadline. So far, that's what bumbling Ben has done every time. He can hit .050 with 100 errors. It won't matter. Bob's wallet is all that matters.
I don't think Nutting has anything to do with their keeping Tellez or no. It's Cherington refusing to admit a mistake, and the more Tellez gets booed and the worse he plays, the more stubborn Cherington will be. Stupid and stubborn often come together.
I just don't get Tellez at all. I don't get the decision in any way or form. Even in his best season, his defense was so atrocious that his HRs barely offset it for barely positive WAR.
How is that a plan when they are other FAs out there? Frankly, the entire analytics department needs fired for that decision alone. Because someone needs to come in with a one-page pre-signing report on Tellez titled "No Fucking Way."
I didn't get any move they made this offseason except trading for Gonzalez, because it was very low-risk, possibly high reward, and resigning Cutch (mostly for nostalgia and ticket sales). Every other move, except Perez, was garbage. You could argue that Perez was a good signing, but I would have gone bigger with someone else. My choice was Imanaga. Give him 18 million per... whatever it takes within reason. That was my take on the whole thing.
What is so infuriating about this owner: spend $2 million more for a 1B, and very likely they get some solid production.... And he still makes a profit!
This is the plan and Ben's followed it every offseason. Spend just barely enough to convince the casual fan, as well as the dumber beat writers, that you're sort-of trying to win, then dump as much of that token contract as possible at the deadline. It's an incredibly cynical strategy.
But they spent 32 or 33 million this off-season. Nutting didn't pick those guys. Cherington did. Nutting's cheap... absolutely... but he doesn't sign the garbage free agents year in and year out when there are much better options available. That's on the GM.
It's all on all of them. Ben does this every year. If I'm Nutting, the first thing I'd ask at the end of every offseason is, Why are you throwing away my money on 3-4 bad players every year? Why not sign 1-2 good players? But Nutting doesn't notice or doesn't care. How does that absolve him?
Maybe when Hayes gets off the IL, that is the time to put Joe at first while Triolo can also get some at bats at first, second and third.
Why? Triolo can’t hit.
4 reasons
Never understood this one
5-0 in domed stadiums.
Don't let Nutting hear that. We're not too far from the stadium deal expiring. He might demand a dome instead of renovations to PNC.
Great to get the win and see some offense. Love BRey getting 5 Hits. Love Cruz heating up.
And especially good seeing Cruz apparently having fun again with that big smile of his.
Glad they didn't blow Mitch's W. He did what he does best, which is battle.
Wooo!!!! We won!
Nice to see them win in Milwaukee. Rowdy has to be DFA’d after this series if this continues right?
In our dreams, but this org doesn’t acknowledge mistakes easily.
Cherington’s married to the guy and bought him a $3.2 million ring. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
He's here til the 4th of July. Like it or not, and since he can only DH or play 1B. He's not going to be on the bench.
Bookmarked
Send him to the IL with a sprained giblet. Let him get some sun in Bradenton.
On the Chicago station, they were joking about Alzolay went on the IL and by the way he sucks right now, out of options, but don't want to release him.
I think you’re right but hope your wrong. I hope they do the right thing and get rid of him if he doesn’t heat up this week.
I wouldn't waste your time refreshing the transactions page
He's just brutal at this point and yes should be released.
Can the Pirates send him to the minors or is that not an option?
They would still owe him the $3.2M no matter where he played, but I think he has enough service time to refuse a trip to the minors after being DFA'd and could become a FA. Ethan could probably confirm if he's around.....
Yeah the guy just isn’t any good and has shown no signs of coming out of it.
The offense won a game! Put a star on this date, just like for a solar eclipse.
Booyah!! Raise it!!! 19 down and 122 to go!!
Let's all be happy. We just beat the first place Brewers at their place.
Don't worry be happy!
I was expecting that response from bmcferren, but he is either asleep or working on tomorrow's trade proposal.
Gotta build on it now—need to win at least one of the next two and then do no worse than split with the cubs.
I'll be there tomorrow -- hoping for more of the same!
I was toying with the idea. 3 hours and 15 minute drive.
Nice play Triolo!
Bednar still doesn't look right.
Looks a lot closer to how he's always looked -- he has always flirted hard with trouble.
Yep. He's always been productively wild. He's looked better every game now for a while. Don't know about him going 3 days in a row though too often.
Well, he got it done, which in that hellhole is no small thing.

It’s real easy to blame Shelton for that but when Cherington openly says he’s sticking with these guys regardless what choice does Shelton have?
Unless Ben is making out the line up it's Shelton fault how he uses these players.
I could care less about distinctions between these two idiots. They're partners in fraud.
I would have been cool with the bunt if Joe would've pinch hit for Tellez.
Shelton is literally teeing up situations for Tellez. But you can't do it indefinitely when you're hurting the teams chances.
I'm cool with anything that gets Tellez out of there. He's a travesty. And if Bednar blows it, he'll get blamed, but I'd blame Tellez and the idiot manager.
That would make too much sense. We wouldn't want to do that.
2024 Tellez should be in every textbook as a the definition of the Sunk Cost Fallacy.
He's a net negative. The money is owed no matter what. Cut him.
No matter what happens, Tellez will keep playing so they can try to ditch a little of his salary at the deadline. So far, that's what bumbling Ben has done every time. He can hit .050 with 100 errors. It won't matter. Bob's wallet is all that matters.
I know the score. Treat cheap players as investments, and then trade them for sub-midling relief prospects if they work out.
I just don't see how you can't tell the boss, "Well, this bet didn't work out. Let's move on."
TBH, I can't wait for Tellez to have one week where he hits an .800 OPS just so Brownie will talk him up as the second coming of Babe Ruth.
I don't think Nutting has anything to do with their keeping Tellez or no. It's Cherington refusing to admit a mistake, and the more Tellez gets booed and the worse he plays, the more stubborn Cherington will be. Stupid and stubborn often come together.

Brandon belt is still out there, or gary sanchez wouldve been a great option
That's the worst part. I just don't see how Tellez was the answer given the other options.
If lamb is packing his bags right now
And that there was Tellez's defining moment.
Okay fine, I’m good with that now get him the feck out of here.
The ole sacrifice bunt in front of Tellez ploy. Not just smart... it's very smart.
In theory such a smart move
Gonna need more insurance runs with this group. Please, let this inning be sponsored by Geico or Progressive.
