Gameday 55: Big pitching matchup in Detroit

After winning two of three against the Atlanta Braves, and then having Memorial Day off, the Pittsburgh Pirates will play a quick two-game series in Detroit against the Tigers.

It will be a great series for starting pitching, as Jared Jones will take on Tarik Skubal in the first game. The game on Wednesday will feature Paul Skenes for the Pirates, facing Jack Flaherty, who despite his 1-4 record, is having a really good season so far.

Having a two-game series sandwiched in between a pair of off-days couldn’t have come at a better time for the Pirates, as Joey Bart left the game on Sunday with an injury and Martin Perez is heading to the Injured List.

With the two off-days, they don’t need a fifth starter for a little bit, so they could opt for another bullpen arm to help out until they do.

Quinn Priester also pitched on Sunday in Triple-A, so he’s an option when the Pirates finally decide to go with a fifth starter.

First pitch of game one is expected at 6:40 pm ET.

Update: Ke’Bryan Hayes was just activated from the injured list and Grant Koch had his contract selected.

Martin Perez and Joey Bart both to the injured list.
