The Reds cut Jaimer Candelario today even though they owe him $23 million. He had been on the DL since April 10th. They activated him and DFAed him on the same day.
Why? “Because it gives us the best chance to win.”
They beat the Yankees this evening and are three games over .500.
FWIW it looks like bWAR doesn't have tonights game taken into account yet. He's at 0.4 fWAR but as a counting stat that should keep going up as he gets more games in
He's better than he has ever been. His breaking stuff is the best it has every been. He is one of the top 15 relief pitchers in baseball right now IMO.
I hope Nutting prevents GMBidiot from trading him at the deadline. Let a new GM decide what to do with him. He may well be worth bringing back next year.
I don't trust BC trading him or anyone for that matter. The only items he should be allowed to trade for are compA/B draft picks with Horowitz making the picks.
That Cherington is allowed to handle the draft and the trade deadline shows just how little Nutting actually cares about the fans, the team, and being competitive. Cherington is bad, but Nutting is worse.
And I am not talking about being cheap. I get that he does not have the Yankees revenue and cannot spend more than he takes in, but that does not excuse him from keeping Cherington around. This has nothing to do with being cheap and everything to do with not caring at all about his product, brand, or customers.
But... he still has one more year of arb. Keeping him will be cheaper than finding a comparable replacement. You are talking multi-year, 2 or 3 years, minimum $15 million per to get a comparable guy.
And yes... there is no way, given his track record, that GMBC gets appropriate value for Bednar, which should be high.

The contrast between this and the scammers running the Pirates is startling.
Is Nick’s defense that bad? He’s still at 0 WAR even after his 5-5 game this evening. He’s slugging almost .500.
nerds ruined baseball
Nerds confirmed for us that Nick is a good 2B.
StatCast has him at 2 OAA, which is consistent with last year.

OK. It’s confusing because ESPN uses bWAR and on his stats page the totals are updated but the WAR is 0.0. Thought that was odd.
BOOYAH!!!! Always a good day when the Bucs beat Milwaukee…. Raise !!!!!!
2 competent hitter added to this roster and it’s a playoff contender. Nick is solidifying his spot. TJ needs to learn another position, stat.
Anybody notice it was Nick Mears got the loss? He's having a very good year for them. Bullpens are funny things.
But our Nick is hitting .320, which isn't funny at all. OPS is .843.
we all knew he had it in him
Back to 16 games below .500, the Pirates' natural habitat.
Sweep gets Kelly back to .500
Wed game should be fun
Man, it feels good. 🤣
Bednar’s era now under 3
His xFIP was actually 2.55 coming in. Weird season, but this does seem to be the real Bednar.

Theoretically, he should be traded, but not by this idiot. The less the nitwit does until he gets replaced, the better.

Mmmmm . . . trade bait.
Nicky Sticks lives!

Nick Gonzales. Professional hitter of baseballs
We may never lose again
If again means tomorrow.
Raise it!!!
Fuck yes!!!
RJTR!
Bednar getting squeezed here
Bart is dropping his mitt below the zone. He could steal those if he tried.
NO MATTER!
Coincidence Pham has his 3 hardest hit balls in 2 years and a HR for the first time in a year right after he does something to his eyes?
Yea I’m not buying it either. Blind squirrel.
Always keep that tag on, kiddos.
