Oh, go ahead and enjoy it. What harm can it do? There’s a very good chance none of us will ever see anything like tonight again. We’ll probably see 14 runs scored again and might even see a game with 7 homers, but Grandal, Taylor, Suwinski and Tellez (2) all hitting homers in the same game? No way. They don’t even hit homers in the same month. So, smile. Maybe it’s the start of that internal option improvement Cherington keeps talking about. Okay, probably not , but it’s better than losing, and he has no intention of doing anything to improve this team regardless.
No intention? Like, I agree that internal improvement can only go so far and I even agree BC may fail to get anyone in a sellers market, but no intention? That’s just not even a reasonable take. He may be bad at his job, but he isn’t a patsy who doesn’t care at all. He’s a GM of a major league team. Not many human beings completely do not care at all about their job description.
You may be right about my use of the word “intention.” There’s no way to really know what goes on in someone’s head. That can only be implied by observing their behavior. Perhaps I should have said he’s shown no inclination to do anything to improve this team. Feel free to argue with that too if you like but examples might be difficult to come by.
Is he incompetent and would that be any better? Maybe he really wants to win but doesn’t know how? Does he have a secret plan that’s about to come to fruition? I doubt he’s incompetent but is instead doing what’s he’s been tasked to do. You apparently assume that his job description includes the duty of building a winning team, but that’s more of an organizational goal than a specific job falling under the umbrella of the GM’s “general managerial” duties.
I suspect the thing he cares about most, like most loyal employees, is pleasing his boss. Does Nutting care about winning? He says he does, but do his actions support that? Will BC do anything in opposition to his bosses wishes? Like most of the rest of the world, he’ll soon be looking for his next job if he does.
I’ll do my best to hope that you’re right and that he deeply cares about winning, but until there’s some action to show he “intends” to improve the team, please excuse me if I remain skeptical.
He hasn't shown any and he's poured a bunch of cold water on any talk of acquiring difference makers in the media. I've personally come around to being ok with him not trying to improve the team because—even if he had the intention—I doubt he has the ability to swing a trade that improves the club after watching what his $30M spending spree this offseason has brought in terms of production.
If you insist. I think it is hyperbole and that requiring a “difference maker” to prove intent is a false equivalence. You can disagree with how someone operates without claiming they don’t care. And yes saying he has no intent to improve the team is the same as saying he doesn’t care. That’s hogwash.
Glad he enjoyed it! At least he's seen a few WS wins and some playoff wins. Try being born in the 80s, only knowing the Sid Bream game as the best Pirates season in your lifetime, going through The Streak, Huntington's failed run and now sitting through Cherington haha.
Watching the 1979 World Series on a little black-and-white TV with fuzzy reception, rabbit ears, and tinfoil, way out in the country is a memory that I will have until the day that I die. Would be nice if a new generation of Pirate fans could experience something similar.
My most vivid memory of Pirates baseball is Bream getting called safe and my dad putting his fist through our dining room cabinets lol. Second would probably be Cueeeeto but then 3rd would be walking back to my Chicago condo from a bar after watching Arrietta carve the Bucs up in the wildcard.
He has seen exactly one more WS win than me. They did nothing of note before 1960,. Thanks for reopening the Sid Bream wounds, lol! Still remember that night like it was yesterday……
I get the appeal. The loud redneck is not my style though. I much prefer the quiet professional: i.e. Reynolds. To each his own. Whatever the case, it would be nice if he can keep this up. A couple more weeks of this, and I will forgive him for being completely unplayable for 2 1/2 months.
I’m sure it’s happened before but it must be rare to score 14 runs with all runs scoring on HRs.
I know I should enjoy it
I want to enjoy it
But it’s hard not thinking that this perpetuates the issue

I don't think he cares. I think he's collecting a paycheck. If he _did_ care and this is him trying, it's even worse!
By the way, Muck the Fets!
My 90 year old dad was having fun watching this one. He has seen far more sucking Pirates baseball than any of us, lol!

Yikes. That will shape a fandom. Being at the Cueto game was amazing though.

2 is better than 1 is better than zero :)
Shelton, run this lineup out again tomorrow…assuming it’s a righty on the mound
Lefty I believe ……..just double checked. Lefty David Peterson is starting.
Is anyone else really starting to like Rowdy Tellez?
Hitting the ball extremely well over his last 100 ABs or so but really needs to sustain this for at least two of the next three months.
No.
He seems like a good guy but he's not a starting 1B on a MLB competitor for sure.
pretty much whomever was still in PNC at the end love the guy.

Enjoy folk heroes when you can. We all know what he is over the course of a season. Carpe Diem.
