Termarr continues clicking. 2 hits and a walk for Altoona. He's prob not the future of the franchise like Griffin, but he may yet be a contributor. Not sure where you eventually drop him in the field if Griffin is SS and NickGon is 2B, but that would be a good problem for a team this lacking in depth to have to sort out.

The scenario you described is the problem I hope we have. If Termarr looks like a legit MLB starting 2B then he and/or Nick become trade candidates to either fill a hole or bring maybe a very interesting (not DSL level long shot) prospect back. IMO neither Nick or Termarr appear to be candidates to play full-time somewhere other than 2B so let's hope Nick and Termarr kick butt and we have a good surplus.

In a perfect world, Gonzales becomes a first division regular at 2B and Griffin (or someone else) is the SS. I’m skeptical on Termarr, but if he clicks maybe he can serve as a Josh Harrison-type the first couple years and bounce around the infield (is his arm strong enough to fake it at 3B?). Would be a nice problem to have!

Florentino with another double

He’s never looked completely out of place and he’s facing kids 4 years older than him. Some strikeouts sure, but you almost always see some sort of adjustment. He plays a really good CF too

I talked about him A LOT going into the season and am still wondering if I didn't actually talk about him enough

I haven't seen nearly as much as you but this kid looks so legit. Even after the strikeouts yesterday, he only looked a little out of step on one (chasing the high fastball) of them. Only one bad game after his first few in Bradenton. He might warrant a look see in Greensboro before the season is over.

Another double for Florentino. This one more of a hustle double on a softer hit to left center field.

I say 'softer' but it was 95 mph off the bat so it counts as another 'hard hit'

Not sure how I can mention this enough, but I LOVE watching Wyatt Sanford hit. Just really strong at-bats, almost all the time.

If he qualified with enough PA’s, Nick Gonzales would be third in the NL in batting average. Couldn’t be happier with that kid’s progress.

He's gone from the point where opposing brodcasters in High-A were pointing out his obvious issues with breaking pitches to where he's at now.

Incredibly impressive

So, Anthony and WTM, is there any way to find out what the hell is going on with Tony Blanco, Jr.? I was checking the MLB pipeline Pirates top 30 and there he is at 21, two places ahead of Adonis. Seriously? The guy is never on the field.

Anthony, especially since you are a bona fide journalist writing for Baseball America and DKPS, can you possibly get some official word from the Pirates as to what is going on with this guy? Are we going to see him in games in 2025?

Didn't his father die in that nightclub fire? Might just be taking a little time away from the game to mourn.

Five shutout innings from Victor Cabreja in Bradenton.

That's quite the night of pitching in the system

Another crappy outing for Holderman. Allowed the only run in the system so far.

I know there have been calls to release him (I don't think from you) but the guy has options and unless something has changed a live arm (but currently ineffective). Officially send him to AAA post re-hab and see what happens. Simple message to him, get people out and you will be in the queue for the regular (all teams do it) AAA - MLB bullpen shuffle.

Yeah, option seems the sensible . . . uh . . . option.

Cabreja just allowed one, but that's an insane run by the starting pitchers tonight

The Pirate organization is in a serious time warp. It’s 1968. Or maybe even 1914. No power and a ton of pitching.

It is nice when you have Chandler, Kelly and Curtis all dealing on the same night. If only we could capitalize on the pitching depth and young developing hitters

And Cabreja! Ha, he’s doing Cabreja stuff. No Ks, but four shutout innings on 37 P.

We don't tolerate Cabreja slander around here haha.

Pretty sure I heard the broadcaster say he only needed 13 pitches to get through two innings and I was like "Yep, sounds right"

He's done after 5.2 shutout innings. Hit the last batter he faced. Two hits, one walk, six strikeouts.

79 pitches, 51 for strikes

Depending on the base runner will have an 0.81 ERA in two starts in AA so far

Edward Florentino has one of the sweetest swings I have ever seen. Just drilled a double to right center field that scored a pair of runs. He's struck out some, but it's never been from him looking out of place.

He's 18. And playing very well at a very advanced level for him.

Edit: 105.8 mph EV. He's 18 and VERY MUCH has the frame to add more power.

Bubba appears to have come around well after the 2nd. Four very well pitched games so far.

Expand full comment
theobserver's avatar

What is the current theory of why Bubba's still in AAA? Clearly, we're past any theory of service time manipulation. Just needs more seasoning? Waiting for a starter to disappear via injury or trade?
