I think some of the minor league bats acquired by this regime over the last season and a half/two seasons show promise and a shift in drafting and development…
I also think this regime won’t be around to see if they pan out or take credit. The damage done has been irreversible.
I am cautiously optimistic about the many Latin American players starting to work their way through the system and about KG, but with KG I'm reminded of the Angels hitting on Trout but not having the talent in the FO to build around him.
The concern is that they look promising in the minors but can't make the adjustment to the majors as has been the case with Davis, Suwinski, Bae, Endy, and others, some who are no longer in the organization. I still have hope for all of those guys listed if they're given an opportunity, but it does beg the question of whether our FO is missing something in their ability to evaluate (e.g., identify things in players' swings that will be exploited by MLB pitchers) and/or develop (e.g., help players adjust their swings as necessary).
Yeah I mean there’s a reason all of those players you mentioned were considered top prospects who flew the minors, yet struggled at the major league level. An argument could be made that the talent evaluation was accurate, but the coaching/development/preparation/game planning at the major league level wasn’t where it needed to be to get the most out of these players in the bigs. I think that’s been observed and acknowledged, but that it’s also too little too late.
Fwiw, I wouldn’t mind seeing the new drafting and development crew get some more time (Horowitz, Kwan, Mendoza, etc.), but yeah Cherington has to go.
Yep we've seen this play out time after time. Full of hope in A ball and then they wash out as they proceed. Until they actually develop a few hitters, I'll bet against this organization every time.
I hate the losing but it is good that the Pirates are reminding everyone what they are. Hopefully Nutting finally fires BC. That is the easy part. The hard part is hiring someone better. Of course he could sell the team…
Nutting clearly lives in his own bubble. I don't know how people can be such pieces of crap and yet everyday we see it. No morals, no empathy, no integrity.......The rich just getting richer off of the middle and poor....... The fans should just boycott buying tickets for the rest of the season. Make this a news item everyday to force him out. Even then he probably wouldn't sell unless the league steps in.
I can't even imagine the ransom it would take to sell the team. If Bob didn't sell when Lemieux tried to put together an ownership group or when Cuban did, it's hard to see what the offer he couldn't refuse would look like.
He has said multiple times that this is a legacy business that will be passed down to his daughters. I don’t blame him considering what he paid nearly 30 years ago. Nonetheless, I think the only hope is: 1) his daughters take a different approach at running the organization, or 2) they simply say they have no interest.
On the bright side at least Keller didn’t take another “L” tonight. I would have rather seen Bednar in the 9th but it is what it is. Bad team finds ways to lose
So, I had stuff to do, and I looked up and saw that Suwinski was 2 for 3 tonight: 2 swings in 3 ABs. Guy really needs to be more patient. That free-swinging is going to get him sent back down.
In all seriousness, what happened to the guy who hit 26 HRs and had 70+ walks just two years ago? He was a 2.2 bWAR player, which on this team would make him their most valuable position player. I just don’t get it.
The game is littered with Suwinski-like stories. I hope he figures it out. If not, he can grab a cold one with Phil Plantier and Kevin Maas (and Warren Morris and…).
Sorry, can't help with advertising right now. I'm currently paying attention to the second-most famous groundhog in Pennsylvania and picturing Punxsutawney Phil whispering into his ear, "Say my name."
This is by far his worst month ever. He's now around .040 for July. It has to be killing him.
He's got some really odd splits this season. Hitting lefties better than righties by a long shot at home (.273 vs .234) but hit righties better than lefties on the road (.218 v .189)
Cubs are going to run away with this division. Easiest remaining schedule in NLC. .483. Brewers remaining opponents are .513.

This has to be the last year of BC right????

If the man had any scruples he would sell but I'm extremely doubtful that it will happen anytime soon.

And it always helps to look up the tankathon website when we are losing.
Rockies fans don't even have that luxury. Poor bass terds. Or the Nats fans but I don't mind them suffering as much.
I'm calling a 0-9 road trip.
I guess they’re saving Bednar’s arm for his next team.
Welp, they had a lead at least.
The bar couldn't be lower than that statement.
I'm sure Year 7 of taking baby steps will be better.
This teams offense is as offensive as a babys diaper.

This is another game that goes into the "need more bats" file.
I've got a few files like that at home that are busting open from too much stuff, scotch tape holding them together.
Nick Loftin, Pirate killer
And with that hit he got over the Mendoza line at .202
So he could bat cleanup for us?
Good move to Mattson. We need a K......now.
This Dugan lawyer reminds me of what Vizzini would look like with hair.
What am I missing? Why are we pinch hitting Frazier for Davis?
Frazier was 4-9 w a HR vs that pitcher.
Meh. Let Davis hit!
I think I prefer Henry defensively in the 9th or extras.
Bart got no calls on the edges.

It’s as if he has PTSD, and it kicks in the minute he comes back to the majors. He’s paralyzed up there.
Suwinski is the parody that the Cherington Pirates deserve.

Santana is amazing. This may be a crazy one-year bullpen thing, but he is lights out night after night.
We’re not allowed to compliment our players or they’ll implode soon afterward.
I really hope this post doesn't age poorly.
I considered the jinx issue, but thought he would go only one inning. Oh well.
need to parlay him to philadelphia for Justin Crawford
What happens to Kiriloff?
his back fell off
Always had a wrist thing too. Twins are an injury prone team. Buxton finally stretched out those hammies.
Wrist and back? Cherington will move heaven and earth to acquire him.
He retired
Damn. I wanted him and the dude the Reds drafted from Pittsburgh to do well and be our next Walkers. Austin Hendrick I think was his name.
Hendrick is having his best season at 24 in double A. Still striking out about 30% of the time.
Can someone please tell where Baierl went and why they're better than ever?
They went on a Cruz with century 3 Chevrolet. Someone now has the rest of the ad stuck in their cranium

Man are we bad with the bases loaded. Just crazy. BRey continues his negative WAR ways…
He's having a BAD season for sure.
This is by far his worst month ever. He's now around .040 for July. It has to be killing him.

Back to being unable to get a two-run single, much less a bases clearing double. Those six games in Pittsburgh were a mirage.
