I’m thinking they have about $30m-$35m to spend in FA and/or taking on salary.

Whew, gonna be some tough decisions to make.

Curious what you think the most critical decisions are?

I think it’s:

1) Rotation behind Keller/Oviedo

2) sorting out MI semi-prospects

3) 1B

I don’t see any easy solution to any of those (well, I see easy choices, but they are either not something the team will do (sign Nola and trade for Glasnow) or don’t solve anything (re-signing Santana, for instance).

Great starting point. Maybe this was covered in one of the primer articles, were the recent round of outright waivers just speeding up the DFA process? Were they actually DFAd and then immediately put on outright waivers?

No, the players were just placed on waivers/currently still on waivers as a way to clear the necessary space for Monday.

A player doesn't need DFA'ed in order to be placed on waivers. DFA opens a roster spot immediately, while waivers is just a bit of more drawn out process.

Bob thinks that’s fine, but MLB won’t let him play the season with just four players.
