Overview
DeCaro was a three-year starter at North Carolina. He appeared in 53 games, all starts, and threw 270.1 IP. He profiles as an innings eater, as he doesn’t have great velocity or a strikeout pitch. His fastball sits around 92 mph, although there’s some thought that a change to his delivery to get better extension, could improve that. He has a curve and slider that get a lot of spin, and a change with good sink. His command is around average. For his career he had a 3.46 ERA, including 2.87 as a junior. He walked 3.7 per nine innings and struck out 8.2, which isn’t especially good. He did improve that to 9.2 as a junior. Baseball America ranked him 50th in the draft class, MLB Pipeline just 133rd. DeCaro signed for about $260,000 over the slot value of $1,035,700.
