He's a LHH with power potential and a patient approach who just turned 24. He also has two unlucky events: the Covid season when he was 21 and a broken leg in '22
I'm curious about his AAA batted ball data. Hits way too many balls on the ground, but the eye test would tell me he hits them pretty hard. Friggin hoss, but ugly-ass swing.
On Palacios, this is from Mackey’s Q&A; Finished hitting .317 with an .853 OPS over his final 29. I haven’t checked this out but I’m sure he’s right, anyway. Palacios damn near dominated AAA and after scuffing a bit in the bigs put up these numbers in a month plus of game to close out the year, average or slightly above runner, fielder and has a good arm....I don’t see CSN overtaking him as of now.
Hard to depend on a given result with Palacios. For instance, in Aug he had 4 HR, but only a .128 babip, .547 OPS. Then in Sep in about the same number of AB he hits 4 HR with a .395 babip, .869 OPS. Low low's and high high's.
Palacios innings splits does highlight how good he was off the bench. When batting in the 6th through 9th he hit over .300 with good on base and slugging numbers.
I don't really mind him as a 5th outfielder/pinch hitter while showing up in the clutch. Maybe he is a late bloomer or just a large side platoon at his peak but he's a lot more intriguing than most last guys on the bench in recent memory.
I know he has to be on the short list for dfa candidates. Still hope they keep him for a bit longer, if he can just get the ball elevated to let his power play he might serve a purpose.
Njigba would not have been rule 5 eligible until next year. If Njigba is DFAed, he will not pass through waivers. Someone will claim him. He may well be a victim of Cherington and Huntington's plan to play it cheap and call guys up before they are ready rather than sign actual MLB talent to fill roster spots until guys were ready. It would be a shame to lose him. He still shows promise, and some of his struggles last year were probably injured related.
Yeah. You are right. For some reason, I confused his draft date with the date that the Pirates traded for him. Whatever the case, it would be a shame to lose him. He is one of those AAAA players who tantalizes with potential that may never be realized, but it would be Pirates-like to lose him and then see him realize that potential.
I believe you are correct. It goes by seasons after his draft date/original IFA signing date, not after a team acquires him to start his clock. He was put on the 40 man in November 2021 to protect him from the Rule 5 draft that year.
I agree. It’s odd to call up a guy with his talent level (35-40 FV) prior to being fully developed and without pending rule 5 eligibility. It’s not like he was tearing up the minors and forced his way onto the roster.
I stand corrected. But, I still question calling him up as quickly as they did. The OP is correct in that the lack of outfield depth forced them into some less than ideal situations.
The success his brother is having in the big leagues of football may spur CSN to have a monster spring training and make this team. It’s a story that writes itself. I also see Roansy more as the top prospect he was in 22 rather than the injured suspect of 23.
Even as early as spring training last year, there was alot of NFL talk about his brother. I could be totally wrong, but I thought Canaan might have gotten caught up in some of that hype, especially after Canaan himself made the big league roster. He didn't always hustle and my take was he thought he was a little bigger and better than he really was. After being sent down and humbled, it took a while....but it seemed like he was concentrating and working his tail off. Along with hitting over .400 in September his demeanor looked different. Totally focused. Despite having some holes in his swing, I am pulling for the guy.

This has always been the issue. Hits everything very hard but rarely elevates the ball.
Saw something on Bryce Miller working on a split finger with low rpm, while dosing off dreamed Jackson Wolf developed almost an untouchable fork ball.

I'm pretty sure he was drafted in 2017 and needed to be put on the 40 man after the 2021 season.
