Overview

The Pirates drafted Gibson as a senior out of The Citadel. He played his freshman year at Charleston Southern, didn’t play the next year, then played as a junior at Liberty. He was primarily a hitter the first two seasons, then played regularly as a DH and made 21 pitching appearances, mostly as a reliever at The Citadel. He batted 408/480/633. On the mound, he had a 5.26 ERA and had some trouble with gopher balls. He walked 3.6 per nine innings and struck out 12.4. There isn’t a great deal of information on him, as neither MLB Pipeline nor Baseball America ranked him among the top draft prospects. He throws a fastball about 91-94 mph and a slider at 80. As a senior, Gibson signed for well below the $199,500 slot amount.
