MLB Draft Report: Tyler Bremner pitches seven efficient innings
After easing into first two starts, Bremner pitches seven, one run innings
Right-handed pitcher Tyler Bremner entered the 2025 season as one of the top arms available for the upcoming draft. During his sophomore season at UC Santa Barbara, Bremner posted an 11-1 record in 19 games (nine starts), striking out 104 batters to only 21 walks across 88.2 innings pitched.
He was limited in his first two starts, throwing three innings against Campbell and Seattle U. Bremner was pulled from the Campbell game due to ‘cold weather’ and then was eased back in while getting hit a bit (five hits, three earned runs, two home runs) against Seattle.
In his third start against Fresno State, Bremner looked much more on par with what you would expect from a potential top 10 pick. He tossed seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and picked his first win of the season.
While he only struck out four this past week, he has yet to issue a free pass this year, spanning 13 innings.
There weren’t any radar readings displayed during the game, but the broadcaster mentioned one fastball at 96 mph and that he was sitting 95 during the early parts of the game.
It was his change-up, however, that stole the show for Bremner. It’s a ‘65’ pitch on Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, so it isn’t surprising it did well. Of his 12 whiffs on the night, half came with the off-speed.
Perhaps the best change-up of the night was against another righty, as it started at the bottom corner of the plate and dove towards the hitter’s back foot, getting him to swing and miss.
A few times, he missed the spot on the change-up, which led to some solid contact, so the pitch wasn’t completely flawless on the night. However, it is undoubtedly his best pitch and has the movement to get hitters out at the next level.
While most scouting reports noted the fastball's ability to play up in the zone, it worked best at the bottom of the zone against Fresno State. He pounded the bottom of the strike zone with all of his pitches, getting a high number of ground balls, which also led to the low strikeout total.
Jamie Arnold has quickly established himself as the top pitcher in the draft, and Kyson Witherspoon is also off to a good start. Bremner is a little behind them right now after easing into things, but he took a good step forward this past week.
Some other notes from this past weekend:
This was the first time I got to see Murf Gray hit this season, and for obvious reasons, he is one player I was really interested in this draft process. Friday night, he went 0-4 but put the ball in play each time, only whiffed once against Bremner, and was one of the few to put the ball in the outfield against him.
Friday night’s game for Cam Cannarella was a little more what you’d expect from him going forward as a prospect. I’m not sure he’s going to hit for a ton of power in pro ball, which with his contact ability and glove, won’t be too much of a problem. He showed good barrel control squaring up a fastball on the inner half for a hit, and then showed his speed bunting for a hit in the first inning.
