MLB Playoffs: Rays Wildcard struggles continue, Diamondbacks mash way to comeback
quick recap of the opening day of playoffs, with a preview to today.
The Tampa Bay Rays may not be the biggest fans of the new wildcard system currently for the MLB playoffs. Last year they managed one run through two games, getting swept by the Cleveland Guardians.
Led by four errors on Tuesday, they find themselves on the verge of being swept again - and are still struggling to score runs. They picked up just two more hits than those four errors they committed.
Jordan Montgomery pitched seven shutout innings for the Texas Rangers, who won their first playoff game since 2015.
Game two will start at 3:05 pm ET, with Nathan Eovaldi facing Zach Eflin.
The Minnesota Twins rode a first inning two-run home run from Royce Lewis (one of two on the day for the former first overall pick), winning 3-1.
Michael Taylor jumped and robbed a home run to keep the Twins up. Pablo Lopez allowed one run on five hits in 5.2 innings pitched.
Game two will feature a pitching matchup of Jose Berrios and Sonny Gray.
A three run lead at home with Corbin Burnes on the mound is generally good enough to see the Brewers walk away with a win. Carlos Santana drove in a run in the first, and Tyrone Taylor hit a two-run home run in the second, seeing Milwaukee jump out ahead.
Back-to-back home runs from Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte tied the game, and Gabriel Moreno went deep an inning later to give them the lead.
So, now the Diamondbacks enter game two with the lead and have yet to use their Cy Young candidate pitcher in Zac Gallen. He will be opposed by Freddy Peralta.
Backed by eight strikeouts and 6.2 innings of one-run baseball, the Phillies took down the Miami Marlins 4-1 on Tuesday.
Alec Bohm got the scoring under way with a RBI double in the third, Bryson Stott, Nick Castellanos, and Christian Pache all drove in runs to extend the lead out.
Braxton Garrett will look to extend the series out for the Marlins, while Aaron Nola will look to put the Phillies in position to advance.
Everything I was reading was the Twins/Blue Jays was supposed to be low scoring so I bet
- Under 4 runs through 5 innings
- both Berrios and Gray over 4.5 K (this one I'm the least confident about)
Then I also did under 5.5 strikeouts for Freddy Peralta. Milwaukee gonna be desperate, so if he struggles at all it'll probably be a quick hook. Plus Arizona pretty strong contact wise against righties
Sonny Gray + Jose Berrios Over 4.5 K - check mark on both. Good start to the day
