Was weird to see bryse wilson up in the pen during a very close game and then in the game when it became less close. Nice to see bell with a big hit in the 9th as well
Not yet, but this was his seventh pro season, so he should become a FA with the rest of the minor leaguers. Or if not, the Pirates could just look the other way and let him become a FA.
Jobe was a strong consideration for the Pirates, but they decided to take C Henry Davis as the 1-1 and save some bucks to sign two HS Pitchers in LHP Anthony Solometo in the 2nd Round, and RHP Bubba Chandler in the 3rd Round. At this point that strategy is paying huge dividends with Davis at the MLB level, Solometo already at AA as a 20 year old and doing very well, and Chandler, who just turned 21 in Sep, looking very good at A+ this year.
The Bucs Rotation does not look deep at the MLB level to start 2024, but with Quinn Priester and Jared Jones at AAA/MLB, and Paul Skenes, Anthony Solometo, Thomas Harrington, and Bubba Chandler starting the year at AA and hopefully moving to AAA/MLB, the pitching outlook has never been brighter!
Many, many years ago, the Pirates had Jameson Taillon, Tyler Glasnow, Trevor Williams, Chad Kuhl and Steven Brault in the Indianapolis Indians rotation for the 2016 season.
Here's their era's
Taillon - 2.04, 20 starts
Glasnow - 1.87, 20 starts
Williams - 2.53, 19 starts
Kuhl - 2.37, 16 starts
Brault - 3.91, 15 starts
Is the current pitching in the minors brighter than this?
Good to see Jase Bowen off to a good start in the AFL with two hits including a double, and playing the full game in RF. He'll probably get plenty of PT simply because the Rafters only list 3 OF on their Roster and they all played last night and did well.
Also congrats to LHSP Anthony Solometo for being selected to the MiLB Prospects Second Team. The teams have a representative at all of the positions, but only 2 SP's and one Reliever on each team. Great recognition for a 20 year old who had 12 Starts and 58.2 IP at A+ and 12 Starts and 51.2 IP at AA in 2023. Overall stats were 110 IP, 4-7, 3.26 ERA, 118 K and only 39 Walks. Gotta like the possibility of him getting Starts at AAA and at the MLB level in 2024. Fangraphs had him as our 20th Prospect after his limited exposure at Bradenton in 2022. Last year he was a FB, Slider/Cutter pitcher, and was working on the development of a Change-up. Anyone have any info on what he was throwing at AA this year?
Just based on my failing eyes and grainy MiLBtv video feeds, mostly fastball-slider. His change isn't terribly discernable from fastball in movement or velo so the ballparks that didn't have radar readings made it tough.
The 3 B's (Bowen, Brannigan and Binns) teaching the rafters how to strikeout tonight. 4 of the teams 5 K's so far.
That's the pirates way!
The cueto game just referenced in the phils and marlins game, love that game will live on for years

Some fantastic defense showing in this brewers and dbacks matchup
Mayza is a solid reliever
we´ve got a playoffs thread?
i hope we see Glasnow cry on the mound like he used to when he played for us
Would everyone be interested in a playoff related thread? I don't mind throwing one together every morning if I get enough of a response for this?
I like that idea, can chat with some fellow baseball nerds
Absolutely.
I´ll be watching for the next few weeks
The Rays are in full self-destruct mode.
That was some ugly baseball on their side today.
4 Es! wild
DUJ and De Jong have elected free agency. Oh dear.
How will we ever survive?
Imagine the angst when Crowe declares.
I'm too late on this, but Crowe can't elect

There's a full MLB season in 2022, so he can't hit MiL FA just yet...
I thought that still counted.
I'll take an early crack at this for 2024:
C Endy
1B FA/Connor Joe
2B Triolo
SS Cruz
3B Ke'Bryan
OF Henry
OF B-Rey
OF Jack
DH Cutch
Bench Peguero, Delay, Palacios, Bae, Joe/Rivas
SP Mitch
SP Oviedo
SP FA1
SP FA2/Vince Velasquez/"The Blob"
SP The Blob
RP Bednar
RP Holderman
RP Mlodzinski
RP Moreta
RP Borucki
RP Jackson
RP The Blob
You left out TBD!
this checks out
I think that one of the starters is going to come in from trade -- could be Edward Cabrera for Peguero
Jobe is going to be a real stud in the next year or two imo.
Also, excited to see what the offseason iteration of BoD brings AM!
Crazy to think the two walks he had last night in the AFL was two-thirds of his SEASON total this year. He had six in 84 innings

Was that the 70-74 Indy Indians?
By all objective measures Taillon was less successful as a MILB player than say Nick Gonzales or Lonnie White Jr
Glasnow was and is very good when healthy
The other three looked like 4/5 starters or middle relievers
It’s hard to say any of the 5 had less than expected MLB careers
Taillon was a much better prospect in the minors than Nick. Taillon was also successful immediately after getting the call to the show.
Year 1 33.8 era, 3.71 fip and 1.7 fWAR in 18 start.
Year 2 3.2 fWAR in 25 starts
Year 3 3.9 fWAR in 32 starts
Meanwhile Gonzales is a below replacement player
Not sure I understand your comment - was Taillon more successful than Gonzales as a MILB player?
Taillon was a much better prospect than Gonzales.
I know I’ve got my shades on it’s so bright!
let a boy dream, Catch.
I know, I know

I would basically second this from NMR. That's how it felt watching him at times this year.
