I think I've had this answered before, but does any of the BoD crew have access to that SwingGraphs guy?
Seems like they pretty much nailed Corbin Carrol's first half deficiency and predicted his second half improvement on vertical bat angle alone. Pretty compelling, would love to see where some struggling Pirates land.
Pitchers - Solometo, Khristian Curtis maybe Michael Kennedy, Derek Diamond, Bidois, Mike Walsh, Julian Bosnic, maybe Woods, maybe Carlos Jimenez. And actually, Garrett McMillan is a good one that I didn’t think of and I wouldn’t mind.
Hitters - Termarr, Omar Alfonzo, Jebb, Lonnie White Jr, Esmerlyn Valdez, maybe Keiner Delgado or Severino, maybe Cimillo. I wouldn’t mind Eddy Rodriguez but I think it’s probably a bit too advanced for him.
Could see Burrows or Cheng but both being 40 man players already usually doesn’t happen.
It’s unusual for recently drafted arms. Although it’s been done before. Just recently, Rocker was sent in 2022 after being drafted in 2022 for the 2nd time by Texas(3rd time drafted actually).
It’s mostly High A to AA prospects though and some older AAA RP “prospects ” tend to get sent.
Imo, top prospect still get sent every year though. I don’t know where people are getting “mid tier” players??
Usually every player sent is at least thought of as a prospect. But each team sends a RP or two that usually isn’t. I mean, the Pirates sent Bear Bellomy a couple years back. That’s not a new thing either. Fineas Del Bonta-Smith was sent b4. Who is now with the Pirates in Indy and was their 1st round MiLB Rule 5 pick last year.
They have to actually field a team so sometimes a team is probably tasked with sending a player that might not be as highly thought of just based on the position a team needs filled. And like I said, every team usually send 1 or 2 RP “prospects” too.
Think the "mid tier" comment is mostly applied to pitching. Similar to the Cape for college dudes, clubs and players just aren't gonna risk extra miles on elite arms unless catching up lost injury time.
They pretty much use it for guys who missed PT and it tends to be mid-level guys. Valdez, Delgado, etc., would be unusual, although probably not unprecedented. White would be at risk of being overwhelmed. Alfonzo and Cimillo would make sense to me, without having any idea whether Alfonzo has winter ball plans. A good deal of planning goes into this stuff.
I think they can send players on the 40 man but not on the active roster. Endy would need to be optioned unless there is a rehab exception. I'm not sure though, but would like to see Endy in the AFL also.
I am glad that they're replacing their director of professional scouting and their director of analytics and research. And of course there were the changes to the international leadership. But why did it take five years?
Five years barely gets a first IFA class into 40-man territory. Hard to use results as the justification if you don't give a guy enough time to show their bounty.
I almost look at it the opposite way, whether that's right or wrong. Seems like pulling the plug this quickly might mean some kind of internal disagreement/findings that we don't see on the outside.
It's five years of Cherington's term, but Vizcaino had already been in place for two years prior to Cherington being hired. Cherington came in talking about how they were going to revamp the system from top to bottom, but it seems that he's been slow to make some of the necessary changes.
I that five years for a director of international scouting would be too short and you could probably argue that even seven years might be too short since some of the deals are worked out two years prior to when the players can sign. However, it also seems to be a GM's job to identify a problem much more quickly than an average BoD subscriber and yet who on here thought things had been going well with our international signings?
Not surprising because it probably reflects the less than adequate results from AAA and AA, with some but not much input from A+. Liover Peguero should have been the next player up from AAA; needs to be our Shortstop or Second Baseman in 2025.
Busted rebuilding trades that focused on raw hitters (CSN, Head, Peguero, Scott, Escotto), Endy out for the year, and failure to launch from NickyG and Hank.
Oh, I almost forget at this point to include the international prospects. They stink too.
This rebuild looks a lot better if they nail just one of the Marte or Taillon trades. Sub in a Corbin Carroll for Peguro and we’ve got some juice. If you nail both (Luis Gil for Ro), then we have a pennant baby.
Enjoyable, and congrats to WTM for selecting Jhonny Severino. The Indy team enters the week 5 games behind Columbus and the only possible way for them to make the playoffs is if they go 6-0 on the road at St Paul, while the Columbus team goes 0-6. If Indy is 5-1 while Columbus loses all 6, it will end in a tie which Columbus wins by winning the head-to-head during the regular season. Sad to see the Pirates not choose Liover Peguero for promotion to the Pirates.
The Pirates are looking very good with players/pitchers in their 20 or under seasons in 2024:
Players - 20 year olds - Termarr Johnson, Esmerlyn Valdez, Keiner Delgado; 19 year olds - Jhonny Severino, YDLS, Carlos Caro, Axial Plaz, Richard Ramirez, Tony Blanco.
Pitchers - 20 year olds -Antwone Kelly, Clevari Tejada; 19 year olds - Michael Kennedy, Zander Mueth; 18 year olds - David Matoma, Carlos Castillo, Carlos Mateo, Nicolas Carreno, Dariel Francia. I kept it at 20 and under, but expect a lot of help from Carlos Jimenez and Carlson Reed, both 21.
The DSL pitchers I’m interested in seeing come stateside next year and that are under 20 - Reinold Navarro, Ronaldys Jimenez, Cesar Aquino, Adolfo Oviedo, Janderson Linares, Marlon Quintana, Dariel Francia.
Jesus Clode, Angel Camacho, Brandison Polanco probably come stateste too but are older and definitely bullpens arms.
You forgot Levi Sterling too. I think he’s a mix b/ween Kennedy and Mueth.
The FB isn’t as big as Mueth’s but there might be more in the tank considering he was a two-way guy and most think once he concentrates just on pitching the FB will tick up from 89-92 and that he tired some playing SS when he wasn’t pitching.
And Sterlings control is much better than Mueth’s(although not as good as Kennedy’s). And the spin is on par with Kennedy’s. He’s definitely a spin monster!!
But seems like he profiles as some comp b/ween Mueth and Kennedy.
I think I've had this answered before, but does any of the BoD crew have access to that SwingGraphs guy?

Paul Skenes...prettay, prettay good.
Players I would like to see in the AFL:

Nice list.
Hard to find hitters who stand out as benefiting, IMO.
Is there any history of sending just-drafted college arms? I'd love to see what Hartle can do across a few starts in such a hitter-friendly league.
Also wouldn't mind getting a few more innings behind Hunter Barco if he cleared medically.
It’s unusual for recently drafted arms. Although it’s been done before. Just recently, Rocker was sent in 2022 after being drafted in 2022 for the 2nd time by Texas(3rd time drafted actually).

Great example with Rocker, thanks.
Think the "mid tier" comment is mostly applied to pitching. Similar to the Cape for college dudes, clubs and players just aren't gonna risk extra miles on elite arms unless catching up lost injury time.
Bats seem solid AF though.
Ya, I guess with all the injury concerns maybe they have backed off a little on the top tier pitching prospects.
Although I don’t think very many Pitchers were even sent in the past when they pitched 100 plus MiLB innings like most top pitching prospects do.
It has always been used for players to get extra work who have missed some time during the season.
Appreciate that reply, Wilbur.
Is it legal to send big leaguers and yes I want to see Endy in live action again.
I think they can send players on the 40 man but not on the active roster. Endy would need to be optioned unless there is a rehab exception. I'm not sure though, but would like to see Endy in the AFL also.
I think so. Pretty sure they've sent guys in the past who'd debuted. I'm guessing they'll look at winter ball.
John would probably know.
Podcast day! Hype hype
BA has a chart up showing total bWAR by hitters 25 and under, by team. The "rebuilding" Cherington Pirates rank 28th.
There just aren't words to express what an atrocious job this guy has done.
I am glad that they're replacing their director of professional scouting and their director of analytics and research. And of course there were the changes to the international leadership. But why did it take five years?

Oh, great memory!
And the only thing keeping them from 30th is Huntington-acquired Oneil Cruz, right?
Yep
Buried the lede on that Pablo-Sandoval-is-a-pitcher-now story! ;)
Yes there are. SUCK. TERRIBLE. EMBARRASSING.

Hell, even targeting Geraldo Perdoma instead of Peguero would lock in SS.
