Cutch goes to the 10 day IL and we call up Alika Williams? Why? We have at least 3 MI's in Cruz, IKF, and Triolo. The answer is we do not need a MI.
At AAA, we have Billy Cook, a RF/CF/1B lighting it up at Indy since we traded for him a few weeks ago - hitting for a .972 OPS against LHP's and .847 OPS against RHP's. Bae is not the answer in the OF nor at the plate. Time to try something new?
I'll be honest I think this was as simple as 2 guys are hurt, one or both may have to go on the DL but they may not know until later who, so they hedge their bets. If it is the SS who goes on DL then they wanted to bring a SS up (or at least a third MI) and with a short term decision needing to be made just pulling from the existing 40 man is simple. If the DH goes on the DL (as it ended up) then they can soon change their roster mix again (not saying it will happen but they could with 40 man moves). I'm not disagreeing with your bigger points at all as I hope to see Cook and Yorke soon.
No one can possibly know how Cherington's mind works and sometimes it hurts to try but how about this "Lord of the Flies" reference. Don't blow the conch shell now because if it doesn't work you'll have nothing to justify your power later.
If Cherington brings up Cook, Yorke, Davis or anyone else now and they don't perform like superstars immediately, he'll lose his justification for doing nothing to improve the team over the off season. As it is now he can say there's no need to add because the "internal options" in Indy will be available next year. Pessimistic thinking? I know but just trying to think like the guy whose main job appears to be delaying any possible progress until it's too late to actually do anything.
Secondary possible explanation: it's somehow about money. Money is usually involved when something makes no sense.
Between BC and Shelton, it's like they are trying to lose games. Nothing makes any sense. This season is pretty much lost but we can bring guys up and get them ready for next year. No reason for Grandal, Triolo, Williams etc....to get any abs, no reason for half the stiffs in the pen to get anymore innings. Just call up the young guys with upside and let them get some work in.
They have a thing for light hitting, multi-positional middle infielders. Since Ben’s been hired he’s crammed as many guys like this onto the roster as he can.
Not agreeing with their move at all, but I wonder if they plan to have Oneil DH based on his ankle so they brought up Alika to play the field? Would much rather have cook or yorke hold down 2B with IKF at SS if thats the case but thats the only reasoning i can wrap my head around
Thomas Harrington is another of those tall RHP's that teams find in small colleges - he was drafted by the Pirates in 2022 out of Campbell U as the #36 pick. Reminds me a lot of the kid the Pirates will face today, George Kirby, who was drafted by the Mariners in the 1st Round of the 2019 Draft out of Elon College, 2 picks after the Pirates drafted Quinn Priester.
Harrington pitched 127 innings last year, and is still only at 89 innings so far this year. As you noted, he is very efficient and likes to involve the rest of the team - 8 GB outs yesterday.
The top pitcher in the Bradenton game, Inmer Lobo, is well on his way to a nice career. The Pirates had to part with Hoy Park to get Lobo, who pitched 17 innings in the DSL in 2023 with a 1.62 ERA. The 6'1" LHRP now has 32.2 IP for Bradenton with a 1.65 ERA and 31 K. Any further Info on this kid?
Lobo is an interesting guy but he’s not a hard thrower

I honestly think it just boils down to Cook/Yorke not being on the 40-man.
This is the entire reason.

Ben "kick the can" Cherington has a nice ring to it unfortunately.
