BA just released an article on Statcast-based farm system pitching rankings.

The Pirates come in at 23rd based on stuff and 20th based on expected outcomes.

That pairs with BA's previous article ranking them 14th in Statcast-based hitting rankings.

In Year 4 of the rebuild trigger by the need to improve organizational development.

And this is despite focusing VERY heavily on college pitching in the draft every year.

Also not seeing LAm pitchers step forward. I’ve gotten an extensive look at that demographic the last three years and, as a group, they’re not progressing well.

That's really the kicker, isn't it. They've enjoyed an extreme advantage over the talent pool over this same period as well.

I just cannot see any rational argument in favor of there being any sort of improved organizational development, at least in any tangible outcomes.

Less of an asshole than Kyle Stark, sure, but it's pretty damning if you can't figure out how to develop ballplayers any better.

Alternately, of course, is my take that the Huntington front office wasn't actually demonstrably poor at dev, they just had some very high-profile misses and an impossibly high bar for success on account of getting practically zero resources to build a winning club through any other means.

Firmly in the center of the Bell curve amongst all 30 organizations, which just means in order to actually see tangible improvement it'll take being one of the few best. Something this new group just isn't cutting.

Pirates hired a new Director of Amateur Scouting. Guy from Boston. Not clear on who he’s replacing, but the drafting could certainly be better.

Oh yeah? What's DelliCarri doing these days?

He's listed as "Senior Director, Amateur Scouting," so maybe Justin Horowitz slots in under him? Just under him and over the Assistant Deputy Vice-Grand Poobah of Amateurish Scouting and Beer Keg Acquisition.

Odd they had Nick Gonzales marked as a 3B prospect.

Juan machado? is this a name i have completely just missed in my studies?

Weird choice. It’s his third year there and his main skill is drawing huge numbers of walks.

Ok yeah, my quick stats dive left me rather unimpressed though maybe that points to the dearth of minor league talent in that area

I guess this was supposed to be performance- and not prospect-based, but still a weird choice. Lonnie White’s OPS was only a little lower. White is just six months older and was getting his first meaningful pro experience in full season ball. Machado was in his third year in the DSL.

Lonnie white is a much better name to include in an article looking for clicks which makes it even more puzzling imo
