I'm not sure we know how much his hand injury affected the grip on his bat or overall numbers. I do know he had at least one good game before the injury, being the only player to hit 2 homers off Ohtani in the same game.
I found some of the Henry Davis decisions puzzling this year with having him to begin in double A to catch, advance him to triple A to catch a handful of games before, BAM He is now a major league outfielder. He looked lost in RF and for some reason they put him in to catch the 9th inning of a 10 to 1 game once. His bat started going south and he winds up on the IL for a bad hand.
You might be right about the thumb, as there are also a few more holes in the Henry Davis decisions.
They absolutely rushed him before he was ready but let's also not pretend that fans wouldn't have burnt PNC to the ground if they, accurately, claimed they were holding him back to work on his defense.
And no, us fans will not learn any lessons from this experience lol.
The fact still remains that the guys they brought in to replace the former front office for failure to transition their prospects to the show are responsible for the worst rookie performances in the entire sport.
There is nothing normal or advantageous about *every* *single* *one* of your top prospects getting their teeth kicked in.
I know we're just a buncha jags on the internet and have no real influence but I sure as hell hope they're more focused on the very real holes that were exposed in his game rather than banking on full health and some arbitrary number of at bats magically leading to massive improvement.
Let the organized bitching begin!!!! Murphy and I were talking that we think Norris was expecting softball questions, and instead got non-answer answers lol
All the best to Cal, always thought he looked like a baseball player and his swing is up there on the pretty scale, though I guess lower on the effectiveness scale
He very well could be, and although I like him better than 3 or 4 position players on the 40, I cannot see the Pirates giving him a better opportunity to play one of the corner OF positions in 2024. With Suwinski being the designated LH power hitter against RHP's, and Bae raising his stock defensively in CF, Cal would have been spending another useless year at AAA. I think he has a legit shot in SD.
Glad to see Cal Mitchell end up going home to San Diego.
Away for a few weeks in Hawaii, but no real surprises on the 40. I do wonder what the reasoning is for keeping Josh Palacios and Alika Williams, but I would expect that neither end 2023 with the Pirates. There are other issues that need to be resolved, but hopefully we will see some changes at the GM meetings in December.
sources saying Conner Joe will be non-tendered
What are those sources saying about how we'll then fill our very thin depth in RF and 1B?
on the days that tank is catching, endy plays first base, suwinski plays right field and bae starts in center
That doesn't really address depth, but I guess we can plan on an injury-free season.
That always goes well.
while Triolo plays second on those days
Not exactly the most glowing article up about Davis on Fangraphs.

I'm pretty sure he played through the injury until his #'s really plummeted, including the Ohtani game.
Personally, the thumb was an excuse...a cover.

it seems like nobody knows he was hurt last year
Did we miss a brain injury?
Not sure I can make the connection between a sore thumb and drastically declining plate discipline.
everyone is being too harsh on the first year of all our rookies
second mouse gets the cheese
Nobody is writing these guys off.

One good thing, Davis got himself to Driveline early in the off-season.
He's got the drive and passion, expecting a vastly different player this year
Josh Norris' responses on the BA Pirates Top 10 chat weren't very flattering either
If he wasnt predicting 5 hall of famers and 5 all stars then he was definitely way wrong!
Did I miss the BA Top 10 thread or are we not gonna get an organized manner of bitching about it? ;)
Let the organized bitching begin!!!! Murphy and I were talking that we think Norris was expecting softball questions, and instead got non-answer answers lol
The answer he gave on Termarr was the most non answer I think I've ever seen. And that's a competitve field lol
gptNorris
"Oh, that's a typo. thanks"
Ok, yea that one was worse lol
lol, i wasn't at all impressed there either.
Having a couple in-house guys do all the top 10/30s hasn’t exactly enhanced their coverage.
Congrats to Cole on winning his 1st Cy Young.
Eerily similar to his 2015 season with the Pirates.

Still say he's a late bloomer.
