Morning Rundown: Braylon Bishop has a big day, Pirates lose seventh straight
Bishop drives in five, steals three bases, collects four hits. Pirates swept again, losing streak to seven
Braylon Bishop showcased the complete tools that got him an over-slot deal as a 14th-round pick back in 2021.
Against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, Bishop reached base five times, four hits and a walk. He also hit his second home run of the season, stole three bases, and added a double.
The home run (I’ll have video of his day in today’s feature later on) hit the roof of the tiki bar in right centerfield. It was on a 0-2 pitch, and he knew he got every bit of that.
In the second inning (the home run was in the first), he drew a walk and stole second and third. He was picked off at second but still slid into third safely. The double could have easily been a triple, but the play was blown dead when the ball was lost along the wall in right field.
Bishop has had his ups and downs this season but is currently hitting .250/.364/.405 with five doubles, a triple, two home runs, and is 8/10 on stolen base attempts.
The Pittsburgh Pirates' losing streak has reached seven games after losing to the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0. Sonny Gray tossed seven shutout innings, striking out eight and only allowing two hits.
Oneil Cruz, Andrew McCutchen, Ke’Bryan Hayes, and Tommy Pham collected the team’s only hits, all singles.
Mitch Keller pitched well, allowing three earned runs over six innings, but is now 1-4 on the season.
The Pirates will have Thursday off before a three-game weekend series against the Atlanta Braves.
I’m in Bradenton for the start of the FCL season, as well as to catch some Marauders games next week.

These things just make me kinda sad. Hurdle was a good dude and good baseball guy who they held onto for too long and Shelton by all accounts is as well but was served up on the sacrificial alter.
They aren't gonna be worse off by getting rid of him, just feels squishy to celebrate such a thing. Jimmy Leyland ripping lung darts in the dugout loses 90 games with this sad bunch and that ain't Shelton's fault.
a bishop breakout season warms my heart
