My guess is Bumbling Ben has desperately tried to trade Tellez, but since there’s no other GM as incompetent as Ben, he’s still around. So now the incompetent manager is back in cater-to-the-crappy-veteran mode.
Nothing, absolutely nothing that happens with this team is based on baseball considerations.
I thought they did a great job last year of separating the wheat from the chaff in last year's pen. Tossed aside early season underperformers like DUJ, Crowe, and Zas, and gave shots to Borucki and Perdomo. Not sure they have the bullets to repeat this, but the willingness is there.
I mentioned this before this series when they brought Bae up and then the corresponding move was to send Ryder down. Shortening your bullpen before a series where a unsteady Perez is pitching ahead of a hard throwing 22 year old and a harder throwing 21 year old is risky and now you pretty much have burned out your bullpen for the rubber match. They better hope Skenes can give them 7 today which is highly unlikely.
It was a head-scratcher and I had assumed that they'd only allow their bullpen to be short for the first game since they were coming off of an off day and had everyone available. I was pretty surprised when I got home last night and didn't see a transaction to add a reliever.
When we start dreaming of what we could do in the playoffs with a rotation of Skenes, Jones, and Keller, we need to remember that our bullpen is not playoff ready.
I'd been thinking the same thing towards the end of the game--the 5 runs looked good, but we only had a couple of hard hit balls all night. Same with the comeback the night before--the Giants handed us baserunners and other than Cruz and Gonzales, didn't look good at the plate. Heck, they might as well put Tellez back in for one last look (and I thought I'd never say that).
Agree, but we need to take into consideration that Dauri Moreta is gone for the year, Borucki has been out most of the year, Holderman is just returning, Mlodzinski is just returning, Hernandez is still at AAA, and Bednar started the year very shaky. Love the work Hunter Stratton and a few others have provided picking up a lot of slack to date. The talent is there and I expect it will not be too long before the BP returns to being a strength of the team.
Trading actual prospects for a quality major leaguer would be a first for this administration. This past offseason was a perfect time to make such a trade (though at the time we all thought the need was for starting pitchers, not relievers). I think they're gun-shy after only getting their jobs because of how the Archer trade backfired on their predecessors, but we'll see.
The time to act is probably now or we'll be in too deep of a hole to contend. But, so many of our prospects have taken a step backwards, I'm not sure who we have to offer who could bring back a meaningful return (my two untouchables would be Harrington and Johnson, and after those two it gets pretty thin).
Personally it’s still a bit early for me to say if guys have taken a step back. I kinda wait for the weather to warm a bit. Bats seem slow to start almost every year.
Yes, definitely early. However, in the context of making a trade now for a quality major leaguer, I'm wondering if we have enough quality outside of Harrington and Johnson, and the injury concern with Chandler, to make such a trade.
At the time they were drafted, I liked Bishop about as much as White Jr. That was looking pretty ignorant for a while but Bishop may be starting to make his case.
If he cleared up the hitch in his swing, he could be a sleeper prospect. He had decent bat control but would slow down his swing, basically swinging all arms. From the look at some of his exit velocities he may have got rid of the hitch. Like agent said his strikeouts are a bit high but still a small sample size. Let's hope he keeps hitting the ball hard and shows some good plate discipline. In 2020 he was thought of very highly for 2021 potential 1st rounder do to his other tools.
Oneil is on pace for *ten* more errors than Pedro Alvarez in his historically bad 2014 yips year.
Why doesn't my Like button work?
shaddow banned.
I had just asked about Malone within the last week! Speaking things into existence
Why tf is tellez starting against a lefty? He shouldnt play at all but definitely not now

Well Shelton is pretty good at putting players in a position to fail. Miller is just an opener.
Could we rehire NH to just be in charge of constructing the Bullpen. That seemed to be a real strength for him. Where is he now?

And with a 12:35 start today it appears they still haven't made a move.

And the bats still suck. Other than the grand salami from Reynolds, the bats were pretty silent last night.

Stratton has been great. We have had some big injuries, but that's when a good GM needs to step up and fill the holes.
teams that make the playoffs normally trade "prospects" for real bullpen arms in July

JaCoby Jones for Juaquin Soria was a bold move
They have pitching to trade, at the moment if so desired. Problem with that is, you can also deplete your pitching depth real quick.

strikeouts are still way too high but at least he's showing some semblance of production. still only 21
are we going to give Beer a cut at the apple?
also is Gorski nipping at Suwinski´s tail?
