Surprised nobody is mentioning Davis’ pass ball that lead to the game winning run. Also, Cruz had a play going to his right that had had kept it in the infield would’ve prevented another run. Games like yesterday, you need to play well defensively. Had they played well defensively, they win the game.
Two of the five games the Pirates have lost have been because their hard throwing All-Star, and in Chapman's case highly paid, short relievers haven't been able to throw the ball over the plate. They have totally wasted two very good pitching performances by "soft-tossing" starters everyone seems to worry about and are proving once again that it makes no difference how hard a pitcher can throw the ball if he has no idea where it's going.
Monday morning QBing, but surprise that Contreras came in, in that situation, you either want a grounder or K and Stratton or Flemmings especially in the middle of an inning are better suited…..like I wrote Monday morning quarterbacking….
Monday morning QBing is what sports is all about and was a thing long before it got it's famous name. I agree with your assessment and feel at times Shelton just goes "let's see how this works" or as we like to put it 'throw shit at the wall and see what sticks'! I also don't see how you let your worse hitter in Alika Williams bat in the ninth when you have three better alternatives on the bench. But I also always have a nightmare that tempers my excitement of the Pirates making the playoffs and that nightmare is Derek Shelton. Rosters are built for 162 games and managers are hired for the potential 32-53 after that.
Big challenge for Keller today facing Wheeler and knowing that we probably don't have Chapman available (though with his control problems against Philly, that may be just as well).
My only comment on the list of Top Performers would be in A+ where Perachi had a VG 3 innings, after the SP Massey went 5 IP to get the Win - possibly Co-Top Pitching Performers?
Glad to see Bubba Chandler just going strong - I know the Pirates would like to see him continue to succeed, but they would probably also want to space out bringing up their dominant young SP's. Skenes is a sure thing for moving up to MLB this year, and it is very likely that if Chandler continues at this pace, he will fill that open slot at AAA.
Pirates just going about their business of building the bullpen for now and in the future. Hunter Stratton, a Round 16 pick of the Pirates in 2017 has been excellent so far this season with a Save, 7 IP in 7 games, 0BB/10K 1.29 ERA. Another positive at the MLB level is LL Ortiz, 25, 5 G, 7.2 IP, 3 H, 5BB/5K, 2.35 ERA. Also continuing at the MLB level is LHRP Jose Hernandez, 26, 5 G, 4.1 IP, a Save, 3 H, 1BB/4K, 2.08 ERA. Two others I think we will see this year are Kyle Nicolas, 25, who is at AAA, and Cam Junker, 26, a 10th Round draft pick of the Pirates in 2019, and having a good season going at AA right now.
Unless Ortiz starts missing more bats and giving up less walks, I don’t want to see him in the pen on a Pirates contender. The same would go for Ro. Bullpen seems to be pieced together pretty solid this year though.
Could we see Iceman come up as early as this season in a role similar to how the Rays used Price way back in the day? A true weapon in the bullpen in September and October.
Dylan Crews stinks.

Top Gun MLB
Starring Paul Skenes as Maverick, Bubba Chandler as Iceman, and Jared Jones as Viper.
Get your popcorn ready boys, it’s going to be an epic production!
