Welp Luzardo probably isn't getting traded. IL with a back injury. Tons of middling teams and very little going to be on the market. A part of me would think about trying to make the Marlins a "almost as good as before injured" market value trade proposal for Luzardo, shut the guy down completely until rehabbed and then have him do long relief to limit his innings and get him healthy and fresh for a the last month of the season and a hopeful Wildcard push. Could sort of solve the middle relief problem for a big chunk of the season (he's eligible to come off IL 15 days from June 19) plus imagine having Skenes, Luzardo, Keller, Jones for a playoff rotation. That'd be very risky though so zero chance Cherington would ever even consider it.
I'm not sure why but I have the feeling after Nutting's "Ben can add" comments we end up with guys like Kevin Pillar, Andrew Vaughn and maybe a reliever like Hunter Strickland and Cherington says they're "going for it".
It's his pattern. Always aim at the bottom of the market.
Go back to him winning the WS in Boston. He loaded that team with second- and third-tier FAs, and every single one of them had career years. Complete fluke. The next year they all came back to earth and Boston finished last, then last again, then Ben fled.
With the Pirates it's the same thing, except he's working for Nuttin so instead of second- and third-tier guys, he goes for fourth- and fifth-tier ones. His pattern in every area of the job is to aim low.
I would be much happier giving up second tier prospects for someone like Vaughn then blowing up the farm system to get the injury-prone Robert or one of the White Sox SP's. Right now, the probability of the Bucs making the playoffs is about 11% (fangraphs). Adding Robert, for example, would optimistically raise it to 15%. And the current probability of winning the WS is about 0.3%. It would be very optimistic to say that adding Robert would raise it to 0.5% - meaning one chance in 200 to win it all after blowing up the farm system to get a Robert. Much better to wait and utilize a six year window. Odds should be much better in a year or two if someone like Chandler develops and if they can sign a hitter.
If I were the owner, I'd be wanting to do everything I could to get these young guys to the wild card not necessarily expecting them to go very deep but to get them exposure to a playoff series in year one of "the window".
I hate the whole concept of waiting until next year. It’s a stupid idea that serves no meaningful purpose. Try to win now, and when next year comes, try to win then, too.
I don't want to trade Bubba. Me and my crack scouting staff think he will be a top of the rotation type of starter. Add him to the current MLB mix then pick your #5......it could be amazing.
Agree. I'm all for adding a solid OF bat to help this lineup, but not at the expense of potential difference makers. What would really help this team is for Hayes to get going and for once, stay healthy.
I questioned whether Triolo should have replaced him last year. Unfortunately he hasn't produced offensively either this season, but he tends to stay off the injured list and he plays great defense.
What's McAdoo's best position going forward? He played mostly 3rd base at Greensboro but is listed as an outfielder on the Altoona roster, and if I'm remembering right played there at SJSU. Clearly the Pirates have major needs in the outfield and not so much at 3rd, assuming he continues to progress in AA of course.
I'm not so sure the Pirates don't have major needs at 3rd. The coaching staff and FO may not think they do but anyone watching can see that Hayes can't hit and his defense has declined this year.
If he rakes at Altoona would they move him to Indy before the end of the season? Would they consider a jump from AA to MLB? I ask because he does have college experience and started his minor league career as a 21 year old.
Like most of the Pirates position player prospects, their position is everywhere. I wonder if the movement of nearly every prospect all over the place contributes to the difficulty in developing the hitting aspects of their games.
Glad for both Jaden Woods and Charles McAdoo - both have earned it and now the hard part begins at AA. Hope that at least 2 or 3 more from A+ are soon on their way North to AA Altoona.
Shortridge breezing thru 2. The 2 hits were bleeders. Back out for the third. They could seriously use him in the upper levels. I could see him as a spot starter later.
Was in great seats for the Chandler start. Nice, easy repeatable--fun to watch---also a little bit of swagger. The Bowie stadium clock had him hitting 98 3-5 times and 100 twice. Wish I could say ANY of our hitters showed anything.

You're crazy about the Sheetz patches, they look awesome!
More proof some posters on Pirates blogs work for Nutting/the Pirates^

Bob's a loser for even hiring Cherington
He traded kopech for sale
No, he didn't. That trade happened in December 2016. Cherington left the Red Sox at the end of the 2015 season.
My mistake

Hey, novel idea right?
I like the idea of adding Vaughn, and I think there’s more upside there. But if the price is more than Barco, Mueth, or Brannigan, then I pass.
Priester or Barco look about right for Vaughn at BTV. Kevin Pillar would cost about the same. Strickland would be like a Connor Scott sort.
I don't want to trade Bubba. Me and my crack scouting staff think he will be a top of the rotation type of starter. Add him to the current MLB mix then pick your #5......it could be amazing.
Agreed
Trading Bubba and Termarr would be a mistake

Ke' has 1800 PAs of slightly below average hitting. He is who he is, unfortunately. 27.5 years old.
I questioned whether Triolo should have replaced him last year. Unfortunately he hasn't produced offensively either this season, but he tends to stay off the injured list and he plays great defense.
I think he still has hype associated with him
And O’Neil hitting lefties

OF. He’s pretty stiff to play IF.

I saw some scout quoted as saying exactly that.
I'm blown away that an athletic guy like Peggy hasn't spent considerable time in the OF.
Glad for both Jaden Woods and Charles McAdoo - both have earned it and now the hard part begins at AA. Hope that at least 2 or 3 more from A+ are soon on their way North to AA Altoona.
Shortridge and Gutierrez rehabbing in FCL today.

Good for lobo and burrows

Keep those reports coming!
