Morning Rundown: Jared Jones makes final case for rotation spot, Chase Anderson released
Jared Jones wraps up his Spring Training, Chase Anderson finds another team.
Instead of the Pirates letting Chase Anderson pitch on Saturday, they slid Jared Jones into his spot after the game on Friday, which was canceled due to weather.
They also released Anderson on Saturday, seeing as he had an out in his minor league contract. On Saturday, he quickly signed a major league deal with the Boston Red Sox, the Pirates opponent.
Anderson had a fairly strong Spring, but it wasn’t enough for him to make the major league team.
A late three-run home run by Edward Olivares was the difference in the Pirates’ 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.
Jared Jones made his final case to be included in the Opening Day rotation, pitching five innings without giving up an earned run, walking four and striking out another five.
That means he went 16.1 innings without allowing an earned runs, striking out 15, and walking another eight.
Billy McKinney hit a double in his only at-bat, with Jack Suwinski and Ke’Bryan Hayes also picking up hits.

Your support has been amazing for everyone who has subscribed to this point, and I’m beyond thankful.
I see Jones taking the Oviedo heavy slider approach in able to succeed at least for now. The fastball lacks command, both curve and change needs refinement. I’m not sure if more time in AAA is the better place for his development.
I think Pirates keep Jones on OD roster and start him in one of the games in Miami. Big ballpark vs a mediocre lineup seems like a good recipe for his first MLB start.
