Triolo wins Utility Gold Glove, Curtis with three strikeouts in suspended game

After winning a minor league Gold Glove with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Jared Triolo can now add a major league one to his trophy collection.

Triolo was named the NL recipient of the Gold Glove at the Utility position, beating out Brendan Donovan (St. Louis Cardinals) and Kike Hernandez (Los Angeles Dodgers).

After winning the second base job out of Spring Training, Triolo posted a +6 DRS at the position in 2024. He also posted positive DRS at third (+2) and right field (+1). He played over 300 innings at second, and 500 at third after Ke’Bryan Hayes went down with his injury.

He also posted a +3 Outs Above Average on Baseball Savant.

The Scottsdale Scorpions were off on Saturday. They resumed Arizona Fall League action on Sunday night at home against the Glendale Desert Dogs, though that didn't last long. The game was suspended in the bottom of the first inning due to rain, with neither team able to get on the scoreboard. The start of the game was also delayed due to rain. Sammy Siani was the only Pittsburgh Pirates player in the starting lineup. He was scheduled to bat seventh, and he briefly played right field. Khristian Curtis was the starting pitcher. He came into the day with a 6.97 ERA over 10.1 innings this fall.

Curtis allowed a single on the second pitch of the game. That was after the first pitch resulted in a foul ball dropped by the third baseman. Curtis then struck out the next three batters, with the final out coming on the ninth pitch of the at-bat. He threw 19 pitches in the inning, with 14 going for strikes. Limited pitch info was available for this game.

Curtis saw some impressive competition during this short outing. His first strikeout was against Matt McLain, a big league player using the AFL to rehab from shoulder surgery that cost him all of the 2024 season. The next strikeout was against Thomas Saggese, who played 18 games this year for the St Louis Cardinals. Cleanup hitter Zyhir Hope (Dodgers #11 prospect) was the third strikeout.

No word on when this game will be resumed at the time of this write-up. The two clubs play two more times this season. Scottsdale (9-12 record) will play host to the Peoria Javelinas (5-16) at 3:30 PM EST today.
