Morning Rundown: Jase Bowen has monster game at plate, Jack Brannigan gets first hit
It was an offensive shootout between Salt River and Peoria
It’s easy to see why the Peoria Javelinas have had so much success in the early parts of the Arizona Fall League.
Their stacked lineup that included Carson Williams, Kyle Manzardo, Chase DeLauter, Jacob Berry and Harry Ford, struck early and ofter against Salt River, putting up 18 runs on the night.
The Rafters answered the best they could, reaching double digits in runs off of Jase Bowen’s three hits, and Ivan Melendez pitching in another two.
After two straight games without a hit, Jase Bowen came back with a vengeance, picking up three hits - and falling a home run short of the cycle. He drove in Ivan Melendez with a triple in the first inning.
Down 15-6 in the sixth inning, he plated two more runs on his single, which was his third hit of the day.
With the three hits, two of which for extra bases, that pushed Bowen’s OPS in the AFL up to .866.
Off to rough start, Jack Brannigan showed baby steps throughout the game, before eventually breaking through with his first hit, and RBI, of the fall. He walked once, and also struck out another time at the plate.
— Pitching an inning in relief, Nick Dombkowski allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out a pair. He threw 30 pitches, 18 of which went for strikes.
His fastball averaged 90.1 mph, and was anywhere in between 86-93 on the night.
— Tyler Samaniego also pitched a less than spectacular inning out of the bullpen on Saturday. He allowed two runs on three hits and one walk. Throwing mainly his sinker, the lefty picked up two whiffs on 10 total swings.
Both Dombkowski and Samaniego have ERAs of 9.00 in their two appearances this fall.
Bowen's .866 OPS puts him 24th in the AFL (Peoria has 6 players in the Top 25). On defense he is looking like another "tool shed" - in the 6 games so far he has played RF, 1B, DH, RF, CF, and 1B. Fielded 2 or 3 GB's to first, a popup, and he and SS Jack Brannigan teamed up on about three 6-3 putouts.
Definitely not the most, uh, talented group of prospects to go to the AFL from the burgh
