Esmerlyn Valdez k rates

'23) 25% '24) 31% '25) 25%

Monthly in '25) April 30% May 17.5%

Walks are down in May but strikeouts are way down. Might be a hot streak, might be real or not, I just like it's going in the right direction on the k-rate.

Here's a (not-so?) terrible thought... BC knows he is a lame duck and he intentionally messes with the draft as a parting gift... and he inadvertently selects a couple real offensive players who make a difference under new management. And, yes, I've awakened from my afternoon siesta. Too bad!

Expand full comment
TNBucs's avatar

I wouldn't count on him being a lame duck though reading between the lines of Nutting's interview with Mackey, it did sound that way.

However, as I half-joked below, if enough position player prospects continue taking big steps forward, I can see him convincing Nutting that he deserves another year. For example, it's not too hard to imagine a scenario where by the end of the season Griffin and Johnson are considered elite prospects, Rivas, Valdez, Plaz, ... have completed breakout seasons (we're suddenly getting talent from Latin America!), Yorke and Horwitz are contributing at the MLB level, ...

If all that happens and the Pirates have played better ball under Kelly, I could see another year for Cherington. And as much as I hate to say this since six years should have been enough time to build a contender, he'd have a case. Big, big if, though, that all those things happen.

He did manage the Freak Show, right? And was your concern that he overworked pitchers? I seem to recall that from sometime in the distant past.

For me, I think my least favorite manager was Tracy and the worst manager was Russell, but I was biased against Russell from a memory of him waving a guy home as third base coach in the 9th inning of a game where we were down by a couple of runs (i.e., that run didn't matter) and having the runner get thrown out. As manager, I recall Russell pulling Zach Duke with 2 outs in the 9th denying him a CG so that he could hear the applause as he walked off the field. Duke was furious, as he should have been.

Lamont hated rookies, did his best to undermine Aramis. And, yeah, he fragged arms. I was at a Mets game at TRS where Schmidt was struggling and obviously uncomfortable, pacing round and round after nearly every pitch. At one point I thought sure he’d come out, but he stayed in, then came back for another inning, then another. Sure enough, about a week later he went out with a shoulder problem. Lamont would talk about how Schmidt needed to be a workhorse. He willfully screwed up the guy’s health trying to force him to fit some boneheaded stereotype.

The Pirates outfield situation has been so effed up for so long that we’ve forgotten what a real outfield set-up looks like. One thing a good outfield has is a fourth outfielder who’s solid in the field, can get a hit off the bench, can serve as a pinch runner, and can go 2-4 when inserted in the starting lineup once and awhile. In ancient times that meant guys like Vic Davilillo or Gene Clines. I feel Jebb could be a player like that.

I don't think they want to send Bae down so long as Cruz is out. I think Kelly wants someone with a 5th gear in CF. Bae may not be pretty out there, but he is a damn site better than Canario. You're not getting much offense one way or the other, so go with someone who has a chance to get a hard shot into the gaps.

He's active still technically. We are running into the timeframe where if you place him on the 10 day, retroactively, he'd be eligible to come off in a few days anyways.

So, probably just hanging tight. They've made it this far hiding him on the bench, might just stick that way.

He could be an option to go on the IL to make room for Horwitz, though. That'd mean you could keep Gorski up too.

Then we can really get back to talking about baseball and not about low IQs.

Konnor Griffin is definitely lighting it up at A Ball right out of HS. Leading the team with a .912 OPS with 7 doubles/1 triple/7 HR, 20 RBI. He has struck out 39 times, but that is only 27.3% of his PA's. Griffin has Walked 6 times and has been HBP 5 times which together is 7.7% of his PA's. Very much better than expected with the bat and he is also fielding .977 in 22 games at SS.

Why does KG not have more Walks? He's aggressive, has an excellent + eye, and when he gets his pitch, he puts it in play - with damage. Do we want him to wait or try to work walks - hell NO! He is definitely a building block for the future, and we need to accelerate some players ahead of him, such as Brannigan and Johnson to AAA and Javier Rivas to AA. Rivas is 23 and is hitting .969 OPS with 4 doubles/1 triple/9 HR, 31 RBI, and is fielding .971 at SS at A+. He had a hard time getting out of A ball, but has hit very well at A+ and his glove has never been a question. At age 23, we need to have him at AA and hope that the bat can continue to play well at that level.

Time to get aggressive and get some of these kids moving toward MLB. And that will mean unloading a lot of overaged guys inhabiting AAA. We have a lot of positional talent in the minors and we need to get it to AAA before they hit 25 or 26!

Expand full comment
Anthony Murphy's avatar

I think I'm ok with him being aggressive in Bradenton, especially if he is the best player on the field.

But I would definitely like to see more walks eventually. More times on base = good. Especially with his speed. Plus better pitchers will be able to take advantage of that aggressiveness in the upper levels.

I still think it's a little early for promotions, but not too much longer. I'm also not a fan of promoting based on OPS.

I was reminded last year that the first wave of notable promotions came after the 'first half' of the minor league schedule was over and Greensboro clinched a playoff spot (Charles McAdoo was promoted the DAY AFTER the first half ended, midweek).

Don't think it'd be out of the question to see them follow suit with that again, especially with Greensboro off to a great start.

Expand full comment
Melkel's avatar

A reason to promote him before the end of the first half, if he keeps dominating like his last 10 games through mid June. Most likely it'll be mid season but he just looks head and shoulders better than most.

Expand full comment
Aurorus Borealus's avatar

You can tell that a new scouting director prepared the board last year, because there is no way Cherington drafts anyone, prior to last year, whose calling card was not "walks a lot." Having a feel for the strike zone and an eye seemed to be the only criteria that interested the Cherington clan until last year.

Expand full comment
Melkel's avatar

Yep, I hope they look for some prep power bats this year, Rynders gives me hope. I see a lot of comparisons with Griffin and Carlson this year with just needing a swing adjustment. Two different swing types though, Griffin's was long, Carlson's is quick and steep. It's a lot harder to change a steep swing in my opinion.

Expand full comment
Aurorus Borealus's avatar

Speed and power, IMO, are the two things least likely to improve with coaching. Get good coaches, speed, and power. That is the recipe that I would advocate.

Expand full comment
Melkel's avatar

Without swing and miss issues.

My two favorite prospects after the 1st round are big guys with big power and decent speed with plate discipline that don't have much swing and miss. I'm still looking for the fat kid with short arms, I found a couple but unless they're using their thumbs (mlb the show), they can't hit shit in an outhouse.

Expand full comment
Anthony Murphy's avatar

End of June would be end of the 'first half' anyways. So, if we are talking mid June, might as well wait a week or two.

I'd love to see some more walks. Looked at it, he hasn't walked since April 20 I think. Start getting in the habit now. He's done well without them now, but feel like advanced pitchers will take advantage of his aggressiveness as he moves up.

TNBucs's avatar

I just caught up on the comments about the evening action in the minors from yesterday's Morning Rundown, and while I'm excited in reading about and seeing clips of KG, Rivas, and Valdez, I think a few of my favorite posters are making the case that Cherington just needs more time to see these bats reach the majors and all will be good ;)

I think that BC has done an excellent job with identifying and Drafting/Signing Pitching. We had hopes for NG as a No. 1 in 2020, and Hank Davis as a No. 1 in 2021, but both have been less than expected, and both are presently in their age 26 seasons. IMO, it is time to move on. NG has trade value, HD does not.

Termarr Johnson has flaws, but he has been an excellent No. 1 draft pick for us and is already at AA in his age 21 season. Last year at A+ he "struggled", but still posted a VG OPS of .757 as a 20 year old, kept his BB/K close (1/1.3) put up 13 HR, stole 20/24 bases, and fielded .969 in 53 games at 2B and .950 in 36 games at SS (Brannigan was injured). At AA this year he is putting up the same workmanlike numbers (first or second in OPS on the team) and maybe in the Top 30 in OPS in the Eastern League, and will earn an advancement to AAA sometime this year. He will be the first of the better position players drafted to get to Pittsburgh, unless BC decides to do something stupid. Getting him with the Pirates around this time next year will be my hope. He's the complete package, and Konnor Griffin looks like he could be even better.

I also plan to send a few bucks to the Pirates so they can sign Oneil Cruz for at least one of his FA years. I've been big on trading Mitch Keller for two reasons - we cannot afford his contract and still find a FA hitter for around $20 mil, and we need to make some bucks available for the Cruz salary through his 7th year, and maybe an outrageous Option for his 8th year. The D Backs, B'more, Yankees, and possibly even LAD could be interested in an innings eater type of throwback guy. Love to get a nice OF prospect in addition to having a team take on Mitch's remaining money - which is not really expensive for anyone other than the Pirates.
