Morning Rundown: Lonnie White Jr. Lands On IL, JP Massey And Anthony Solometo Return
Lonnie White Jr. heads to the injured list, and a pair of pitchers return from stints on the Development list.
Lonnie White Jr. has already missed a lot of time in his young professional career due to injury, so he had a lot of ground to cover in a short amount of time.
After a brief adjustment period, White has started to show some of that upside that made him so coveted by the Pirates during the 2021 draft.
So seeing him land on the injured list once again was disappointing when it comes to his development.
It seems he has dodged a bullet on that side, as it looks like it was a precautionary move that he was placed on the injured list. During Friday night’s game, White was hit by a pitch in the head, leaving and being placed in concussion protocol as a result.
So, he’ll miss some time, but seems to be doing just fine.
A pair of pitchers came off the Development List and returned to the mound on Sunday for their respective teams.
JP Massey pitched for the first time since July 21 for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. After a great start to the season that earned him a trip to the Future’s Game, Massey started to fall into the same habits that was noted in his college scouting report.
In 19.1 innings with Greensboro before heading to the DL, Massey walked 16 batters. He returned Sunday, struck out a pair of Top 100 prospects in Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel in the first inning, but walked the first three of the second before getting pulled from the game.
It was a shorter - more calculated - move for Anthony Solometo, who was given a bit of a break due to his mounting workload. He missed just one time through the rotation, pitching in the series finale for Altoona.
It wasn’t his best outing, allowing three earned runs on four hits and a walk, in just an inning of work. It’s been a great season for Solometo, who is one of the younger players in Double-A currently.
