Morning Rundown: Mets extend NLCS, Yankees pull within a game of World Series, Termarr picks up two hits in AFL
Mets, Yankees win on Friday, Termarr Johnson with a multi-hit day.
The Scottsdale Scorpions were at home on Friday night to take on the Surprise Saguaros. Two Pittsburgh Pirates were in the starting lineup. Termarr Johnson batted in the lead-off spot and played second base, while Kervin Pichardo batted seventh and played third base. Pitcher Brandan Bidois would join those two later in the game.
Johnson began the bottom of the first inning with a fly out to left field. Pichardo drew a walk in the second inning. Johnson grounded out to second base in the third inning. Pichardo lined out to second base in the fourth inning.
Johnson reached on an infielder single in the fifth. Pichardo flew out to center field to end the sixth inning.
Bidois came in for the seventh inning. He retired the side in order on just seven pitches. He recorded outs on pop-ups to Johnson and Pichardo while getting a fly ball to center field for the third out.
Johnson was part of a four-run seventh inning that gave Scottsdale a 5-4 lead. He singled, then scored two batters later on the fifth home run of the season by Josue Briceno.
Bidois remained on for the eighth inning. He picked up his first strikeout to start the frame. He then walked the next batter on four pitches. That was followed by another strikeout, which took seven pitches to complete. That ended the day for Bidois. He threw 21 pitches, with 12 going for strikes. Reliever Johnathan Lavallee stranded the inherited runner, which gave Bidois 1.2 scoreless on the night.
Bidois allowed six runs while recording just one out in his fall debut. That was followed last weekend by a scoreless inning in which he walked two batters and struck out three. Friday night's game was his third appearance of the fall.
Pichardo flew out to right field in the eighth inning. Johnson struck out to end the inning. Scottsdale added an insurance run between those two outs to make it a 6-4 game. The Scorpions lost that lead in the top of the ninth, when a bases loaded double made it 7-6. That ended up being the final score.
Johnson finished the day going 2-for-5 with two singles and a run scored. He now has a .318/.500/.591 slash line through 30 plate appearances. Pichardo went 0-for-3 with a walk. He has a .231 average and a .797 OPS through four games.
These same two teams switch venues for a rematch with a 6:30 PM start time today. Scottsdale currently has a 4-5 record. Surprise moved to 6-4 with the win.
The New York Mets’ offense exploded for 12 runs as they were able to extend the NLCS and send things back to Los Angeles for a game six.
Jack Flaherty was hammered to a tune of eight earned runs over three innings, walking four.
New York managed a rare feat, they didn’t strike out at all on Friday, picking up 12 hits and five walks.
Pete Alonso hit his fourth home run of the postseason, and Starling Marte picked up three doubles.
Game six will be on Sunday in Los Angeles.
A late rally by the Guardians did not matter as Emmanuel Clase struggled again. Clase allowed two runs in the ninth, as the Yankees now pull within a game of advancing to the World Series.
Juan Soto, Austin Wells, and Giancarlo Stanton hit home runs for the Yankees, and six pitchers combined to hold things off until the offense put it away in the ninth.
The Yankees will have a chance to clinch the series on Saturday. Carlos Rodon is scheduled to pitch for the Yankees, and he will face Tanner Bibee for the Guardians.

I've talked to Anthony a few times about all of the AFL games seeming to just drag on this year, when we had some really fast games since the pitch clock was first used in the league. Last night's game was flying through and I almost wrote him in the eighth inning to mention how quick it is going, but said to myself that I'll just mention it when I let him know the recap was done. Then the ninth inning took about 40 minutes to finish and there was zero Pirates content in the inning. I had 99% of the recap done at the end of the eighth inning. Just needed the final score and updated records.
So my question to everyone is can you just think jinx a game?
Also, just putting this out there, but I'd bet money on tonight's AFL game taking four hours! I hope I'm not wrong and look foolish by saying that, then they only play for 2:30. I would look sooo foolish if that happened...
