BIG series starting tonight. Keller on the hill, no Lynn or Gray this series. Jones game 2.

Time to make a run. LFG!

Skenes now polling as NL Rookie of the Year. Almost criminal to lose a year of control on him over this tank year. Yet another fire-able offense for Cherington if Nutting was paying attention.

Few, if any, MLB Exec’s would’ve started him in Pittsburgh on day one. So basically you’re saying BC should be fired for bringing up Skenes early enough to be considered for ROY, or not manipulating his service time to avoid Super 2, and thus harming the playoff chances.

Which is it?

I'm saying either try to sign him to an extension early before he shows how good he is (ship has sailed) or—if you are going to bring him up—make sure you've actually surrounded him with a for real MLB lineup and not the bullshit one Cherington's created in 2024 or, yes, you manipulate service time to make sure you get him the full 6 years. I'm also just ready for Cherington to get shitcanned. He's a too-conservative moron who's likely to leave this team in worse shape than he found it. As it is now, if Skenes gets top 2 in ROY he's getting traded no later than 2028 and Cherington's clearly aiming at 2025-2028 as his "window". That's a very short window for a very dumb GM.

If he is ROY, the Pirates get an extra 1st round pick. If he also wins Cy Young (a possibility), they get 2, I believe. Calling him up early and avoiding the manipulation typical of the Huntington regime should be seen as a good-faith move (Whether it was actually that or Cherington trying to save his job does not matter. It will always remain as a gesture of good faith.) It is not a bad thing to have started off a relationship with a generational talent in good faith. The problem is not so much the callup as the inability of GMBC to put a team together in the offseason. Good faith only goes so far in contract negotations if the Pirates are unable or unwilling to assemble a winning team for Skenes. The problem is not how they have handled Skenes. It is there lack of any serious effort to win baseball games and the incapacity of the GM to find good ballplayers either via trade, draft, free-agency, or international amateurs. They could certainly sign him long-term, IMO with a home-team discount, if they make a serious effort to win (both by acquiring players and by taking winning seriously in the day-to-day management of the team).

I agree with your post but he doesn't qualify for the PPI, they didn't bring him up soon enough. So they get no extra picks. If he wins the Cy Young next year or is top 2 or 3 they can get a pick as long as he doesn't come in top 2 of ROY this year.

I may be wrong but he needed to be up for the equivalent of a full year to qualify for PPI, you can only receive 1 pick and are removed from the list once you reach a threshold (ex. ROY, CY or MVP) in first 3 years. So if Skenes gets top 2 in ROY he no longer qualifies for the PPI for years 2 or 3 for MVP or CYA finishes. The incentive was put in to prevent service time manipulation, (gain the extra year of control). As long as he doesn't come in top 2, Pittsburgh keeps the extra year of control and can receive a pick later for a CYA or MVP top finish. The big BUT is if he comes in top 2 of ROY, the pirates lose the extra year of control and he no longer qualifies for the other award compensation.

He didn't get called up prior to April 15th so he doesn't qualify for PPI. The Pirates only lose the control and aren't eligible for any of the extra draft picks or Int'l stuff. That's why it was so dumb.

I can’t remember my own posts, let alone others.

He’s the proverbial Pirates “Chicken Little” type fan?

I mean, we all have reasons to complain about management, but Skenes isn’t one of them.

Hey, I got a question.

I was listening to the Pirates broadcast a few games back and it was said out of somebody's mouth that Oneal Cruz heaved a ball to first at 114 mph that pulled Rowdy off the bag.

Was that a blip on statcast or am I dreaming.

If that actually happened, whyn't they put O'Cruz on the mound in some blowout to see what happens.

Blip meaning reporting error?

Can't say for 100%. I'm not sure if he followed up on it. I know there was a similar Elly play where he "threw a ball 109+ MPH" from just behind 2B, and he came back saying it wasn't legit.
