Morning Rundown: NL Central pitching rumors, Jackson Chourio contract?
A pair of NL Central teams looking to jump into the trade market to add pitching
So far this offseason, the St. Louis Cardinals have cornered the market for adding starting pitching among NL Central teams.
Not to be outdone, two other divisional rivals are now being linked to trade discussions.
According to Jon Morosi, the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds are among the teams in trade conversations for Tyler Glasnow and Shane Bieber.
Glasnow is in the last year of his deal that is set to pay him $25 million, so it’s not surprising that the Tampa Bay Rays are looking to move him. The oft-injured right-handed pitcher topped 100 innings for just the second time in his career (2018) and set a career-high in wins with 10.
He’s long had some of the best stuff in the game, it’s always been a matter of staying on the field.
This was the fourth straight year that Bieber has seen his strikeout rate drop, but he still finds success as a pitch-to-contact pitcher. He’s a free agent after the season as well.
His 3.80 ERA was the highest since his rookie season, but he also comes at a much more manageable $10 million price tag for his final year before free agency.
More on the pitching front, as the San Francisco Giants are reportedly focused on landing either Shohei Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto in free agency, reported again by Jon Morosi.
The Giants tried multiple times to land a big named free agent last offseason, nearing a deal with Aaron Judge before he went to the Yankees. They also agreed to an agreement with Carlos Correa before it fell through due to concerns about his physical.
Here's another bit of NL Central news: The Milwaukee Brewers could be trying to work out a deal with their top prospect, Jackson Chourio, on a contract extension despite only playing six games above Double-A.
The 19-year-old Chourio is among the top prospects in the game and could challenge the Luis Robert 6-year/$50 million contract he signed before making his major league debut.
Every Monday during the offseason, we will be doing a mailbag article. You can send your questions to bucsondeckqa@gmail.com or leave a comment with ‘mailbag’ written in it. The email would be easier to track, but you can comment, and I will add it to the list.
We are running a Black Friday special until the end of the month, and you can get 30% off when you subscribe for a year. That comes out to less than $3 per month. If you enjoy the content and have the means to support it, it is incredibly appreciated.
Everything goes towards making the site as good as possible, with eyes on a few trips out to see games live, like Greensboro at the end of this past season.
Erick Fedde looks mighty interesting. For major league teams, that is.
Pirates gonna have to deal with Chorizo and Queso for quite some time. And that's not even accounting for Misiorowski, Black, and Gasser. Or the 20 OF prospects they saw ascend to the majors last year and all see some level of success. One of the reasons I'm sitting back thinking, "Idk if this new developmental team is exactly doing much better than the last. And Pirates don't exactly have a far superior farm system of prospects, as some would like to believe".
