Morning Rundown: Patrick Reilly throws five shutout innings, Pirates split against Brewers
Grasshopper pitcher Patrick Reilly throws five shutout innings and the Pirates split their four game series against the Brewers.
Paul Skenes has obviously gotten the most attention in the Pirates’ system this year, and for good reason, but another SEC pitcher is off to a solid start.
The former Vanderbilt right-hander, Patrick Reilly, threw five shutout innings on Thursday night for the Greensboro Grasshoppers, while allowing just two hits and two walks.
Walks have been a big concern for Reilly, at Vanderbilt and in his brief time with Bradenton last year, but he has just six in 16.2 innings pitched. He’s also struck out 43% of the batters he’s fasced.
A late home run gave the Milwaukee Brewers a lead as they were able to salvage a series split against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.
Joey Bart continued his strong start to his Pirates’ career, hitting a three run home run to open up the scoring for the home team. Jack Suwinski and Jared Triolo each drove in a run during the fifth inning to put the Pirates back in the lead.
Gary Sanchez would hit a two-run home run off of Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning, with Oliver Dunn driving in another the following inning to make it 7-5.
Oneil Cruz put together a solid series against the Brewers, going 6-13 with two doubles and a pair of walks, striking out just one time.
He picked up three hits in the first game, and then one in each of the other three. He finished the Boston Red Sox series with a .587 OPS but was able to lift that almost 100 points (.663) by the end of the finale against the Brewers.

Once again Pirates inability to make plays on defense costs them a win. Two dropped catches in OF and a botched rundown cost them 3 runs.
When is it time to start wondering if Keller is really a #5 SP who can eat innings rather than a TOR SP he has been for a brief period of time?
All this talk about one size fits all approaches and selling out for power would leave one completely unaware that the club's two best power hitters have massively regressed.
