This piece gets the wheels spinning. I like this because it only counts pitches that ends an at-bat (by strike-out). Then it draws correlations. I would even be interested in seeing results based on a) what type of hitter they are or b) what was the situation. example: taking a strike 3 on a close pitch to lead off an inning is often a good gamble. Taking a strike 3 with a runner on third and one out is probably not.
I liked the evolution from Gen 1 sabremetrics of WALKS ARE GOOD to modern philosophy of selective not passive.
And yeah, the swingers are also basically a list of the highest *chasers*, which will eat a talented hitter alive against big league arms. The exception there is Jose Ramirez, who doesn't chase, and is also the best hitter of the best.
Have no doubt that Frazier can play 1B and do it well. If second basemen can play 1B why not put Gonzales at 1B and alternate Peguero and Yorke at 2B. Peguero also at SS, 3B and Yorke also in the OF. Do the 42 games played by Billy Cook at 1B while at AAA for the Orioles count for anything? 994 Fldg %.
BTW, Cook had 49 PA in MLB for the Pirates and hit 6 Singles, 2 Doubles, 3 HR, 8 RBI - did we have anyone more productive - 22 bases in 49 PA?
Feel better now that the rant is out! Maybe they are just playing Frazier to help him get some attention from other teams - I think we should do the same for Derek Shelton - fire him but let him Manage another 4 or 5 games! There's a lot to like about BC but maintaining the "dummy in the dugout" routine so HE (BC) can manage from the GM box is getting very old.
Yeah I know it is spring training, but when I saw that I threw up in my mouth. Anyone who has followed this team during the Shelton era knows he is going to give Fraz starts there.
Appreciate the view of some notable prospects, but does that mean the Pirates are planning to trade for position players that could possibly help? Well, here's something - due to an injury to Madrigal (I think), the Mets could use an IF Utility Player. We have one named Alika Williams, and this is also the Mets team that could possibly appreciate another Starting Pitcher candidate.
Williams is blocked by Jared Triolo who won the Gold Glove for Utility Players in 2024, and I cannot see him as a candidate to win any other position in the infield, and we probably have triplicates of MI's at AAA. The Mets have Ronny Mauricio coming back from his knee injury, but I doubt they want to rush his rehab.
Love this piece up on FanGraphs: Don't Mistake Passivity for Judgement
Couple Buccos show up on the bad list, but probably not who you think...

Great read! Hayes goes down looking >40% of his K's.
Nonetheless, contrary to the narrative, the better hitters are the lookers. The swingers only have 3 bats above league average.

I read it quickly and, yeah, very interesting stuff. Gotta go back and take more time. And, yeah again, KB was seriously screwed up.
Man Kebryan was f'd up last year.
Also does anyone know how to source that "swinging strikeout rate" stat? Am I being dumb?
A sign of coming idiocy: Frazier starting at first today.
What do you mean coming? It's been here a long time.

Probably for the best there’s no stream lol
