Morning Rundown: Pirates lose 1-0 despite Domingo German six shutout, Duce Gourson multi-hit game, Mike Burrows strikes out four
Domingo German throws six shutout, Pauls Skenes set to pitch in the series opener against Reds
Domingo German pitched six shutout innings for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, but they still lost 1-0. In his first start with the Pirates, German allowed three hits and four walks while striking out four batters.
Kyle Nicolas and Aroldis Chapman pitched shutout innings, striking out five combined batters. Wyatt Langford drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth against David Bednar.
The offense fell silent despite outhitting their opponent. They struck out 16 times while leaving 10 runners on base and went 0-6 with RISP.
After a quick series on the road, the Pirates head home for a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. Paul Skenes will get the start in the opener.
It’s been a bit of a rough start for Duce Gourson regarding his professional career, but he had a strong game on Wednesday, batting lead-off for the Bradenton Marauders.
He went 2-3 with a double, two RBI, and a walk and was hit by a pitch against the Lakeland Flying Tigers.
It wasn’t enough, however, as they lost 7-4. Enmanuel Terrero hit a triple and scored a pair of runs. The defense once again struggled, committing four errors on the night. Braylon Bishop had an error but also had an outfield assist.
Garrett McMillan continued his fantastic stretch since being promoted to High-A Greensboro. He struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up two hits.
He has 18 strikeouts in 10 shutout innings that have spanned three games since being promoted in August. Adding in his one appearance earlier in the year (in High-A) that’s 13 innings without giving up an earned run.
Billy Cook played center field and batted lead-off for the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday, going 1-2 with two walks and a double. He has 19 hits, nine of which have gone for extra-bases, in 15 games with Indianapolis.
Mike Burrows continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery, pitching four innings on Wednesday, allowing just a lone run—on a George Valera solo home run.
He threw 64 pitches, 41 for strikes, and struck out four batters. He averaged 94 mph with his fastball and had his change-up working—getting eight whiffs on 14 swings. He continues to mainly focus on the fastball, change-up, and slider, with the curveball coming in fourth.
