Morning Rundown: Pirates make no roster moves on deadline to protect from Rule 5
On the deadline to add Rule 5 eligibile players to the 40-man, the Pirates stand still
Tuesday was the deadline to add Rule 5 eligible players to the 40-man roster, with the Pirates deciding not to protect any of their prospects.
Sammy Siani and Omar Alfonzo were among those who were eligible but not protected. The Rule 5 draft will be during the Winter Meetings in December.
Former Pirates’ minor leaguer Omar Cruz was added to the 40-man roster on the San Diego Padres. He was originally acquired by the Pirates in the Joe Musgrove trade. Cruz was reacquired by the Padres during the minor league phase of the Rule 5 a few last year.
Cruz, now 25, struck out 118 batters in 86.1 innings pitched between Double-A and Triple-A.
The Athletics added Gunnar Hoglund to their 40-man roster on Tuesday, who the Pirates drafted 36th overall in 2018 but didn’t sign. He was drafted 19th overall in 2021 after three years at Ole Miss.
The Manager of the Year for both the AL and NL were announced on Tuesday, with Stephen Vogt (Cleveland) and Pat Murphy (Milwaukee) taking home the honors.
Vogt was in his first season as manager with Cleveland and picked up 27 of the 30 first-place votes. Matt Quatraro (2) and AJ Hinch (1) were the other two managers to receive first-place votes.
Murphy also received 27 of 30 first-place votes in the National League. Mike Shildt, Carlos Mendoza, and Rob Thomson also received first-place votes.
The Cy Young Award will be announced today, with Paul Skenes getting an opportunity to take home some more hardware after winning Rookie of the Year on Monday.
He will be up against Chris Sale and Zack Wheeler for the award. I wrote about his chances on Tuesday, have a read here:

Alfonzo and Siani both mentioned on BA as some of the ‘top players’ available in Rule 5
Mentioned Alfonzo unlikely to get taken though
FG has opened a new “We Tried” Tracker, where teams state they have interest in a player after he’s signed elsewhere. I expect the Bucs to show up there several times.
