Speaking of defense has anyone noticed how little arm strength correlates with outs above average now that they're both public metrics on savant?

Truly the least valuable tool, without equal.

Jack Wilson didn’t have a strong arm. In fact, the scouting reports when they got him said his arm would force him to 2B. But he had an uncanny ability to get the ball to first no matter where he was or what position he was in. If he was standing on his head, the ball would get to first somehow.

Jack had that incredibly quick release.

When you start crunching the math behind the actual time difference of a typical infield throw based on wide ranging velocities you realize it's almost meaningless compared to the time it takes to transfer the ball, set your feet, release, etc.

Triolo's batted ball success certainly won't last (.250 xBA vs +.300 actual) but he's got a ton of improvement to spare in his contact profile. Easy to overlook a guy whiffing almost a third of the time when he's almost .500 on balls in play.

Key series coming up for TBD. This is his chance to get a leg up on a spot, or two, or three in next year’s rotation.

I'm afraid Shelton is going to burn him out with all the usage.

TBD can have Tommy John and pitch the next day!

Has anyone seen Triolo in CF? I know he played there a little bit in the minors. Either way, lock him in as the 2024 Super Sub aka Josh Harrison 2.0

IIRC, he was super uncomfy out there, but seems like a real athlete and could probably fake it in a pinch

Just a little. I have trouble believing he’d be less than fine anywhere.

With current personnel, though, their best alignment is Triolo at 2B and Bae in CF.

yeah he just seems like a classic “ballplayer” that could at least hack it in a pinch.

He's a keeper. Sign him to a long-term contract.

With the current situation of the Pirate Rotation, I am glad to see them opt to not push our #1 Starter into a totally meaningless game on the last game of the season. The others in the race for the final Wild Card slot will probably not be fans of that decision, but he has already exceeded his number of IP in 2022 (159) by about 35 innings.

Hard to find a hole in Jared Triolo's game, and his defense all over the infield assures that he will easily be a high fWAR player each year. Nice decision last year to add him to the 40, avoiding exposure to the Rule 5 Draft, and that decision has paid dividends in 2023.
