Morning Rundown: Pirates sign Gilberto Celestino to minor league deal, former pitchers sign elsewhere
The Pirates made their first signing of the offseason while a pair of pitchers signed with different teams.
The Pittsburgh Pirates made their first signing of the offseason on Monday, inking Gilberto Celestino to a minor league deal.
Celestino, 24, played 122 games for the Minnesota Twins during the 2022 season, posting a wRC+ of 82.
While he didn’t put up the best of numbers offensively, he was solid in the field, posting a +2 Outs Above Average (OAA) that year.
He spent most of the season in Triple-A with the Saint Paul Saints, playing in 55 games, batting .243/.392/.389 with four home runs and four stolen bases.
After being non-tendered by the Pirates late last week, right-handed pitcher Osvaldo Bido has found a new home - signing a major league contract with the Oakland Athletics.
Bido made his major league debut with the Pirates in 2023 at 27 years old, posting a 5.86 ERA (4.94 xFIP) with a 2-5 record across 16 games, nine of which were starts.
Oakland had the worst record in baseball last year, so this is an opportunity to carve out a role on a major league roster.
Yerry De Los Santos also inked a deal with a new team, going to the New York Yankees. It’s unclear if the contract is a major league one; regardless, De Los Santos should get an opportunity in spring training to make the roster.
The 25-year-old De Los Santos posted a 3.33 ERA (4.86 xFIP) in 24.1 innings pitched with the Pirates this past year.
So Matt Canada can be fired, but Andy Haines has life tenure.
I’ll have a more in depth breakdown of Celestino today.
