Morning Rundown: Pirates sign Isaac Mattson, Jayden Kim article, Roddery Munoz traded
Pirates sign a minor league pitcher, more info on a recent international signing and Roddery Munoz traded
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed right-handed pitcher Isaac Mattson to a minor league deal on Wednesday.
Mattson, 28, was a 19th-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels in 2017 out of Pittsburgh and made his major league debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 2021. He posted a 6.23 ERA in four games with five walks and three strikeouts over 4.1 innings pitched.
He pitched in the Minnesota Twins system last year at Double-A - going 3-1 with a 3.62 ERA (5.18 xFIP). He struck out over 30% of hitters he faced but struggled with control (17.3%).
Some details on recently signed international free agent Jayden Kim came out in an article on an Australian baseball website.
His dad was the first Australian to break into the Korean Baseball Organization, where Jayden was born before relocating back.
The article also states he’s solid defensively and has continued progressing with the bat.
After initially being claimed off of waivers from the Washington Nationals, the Pirates have traded Roddery Munoz to the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations.
He was designated for assignment last week.
Munoz had some exciting stuff, including an upper-90s fastball, but didn’t make it past the original roster crunch.
The Andrew McCutchen deal was made ‘official’ on Wednesday, although a note about a corresponding roster was announced, none came about (at least as of 11:30 Wednesday night).
There also needs to be a move made to make room for Martin Perez.
Every Monday during the offseason, we will be doing a mailbag article. Please send in your questions to have them answered! Either comment below with ‘mailbag’ entered in the message or email us at bucsondeckqa@gmail.com.
I look forward to answering what you guys have!
Buccos still in the running for Cuban Pitcher Yariel Rodriguez. MLBTR projects a 4 year, $32 million contract.
Cheap & controllable if they think he’s a starter.
I took a look at the Australian Winter League but Kim is not playing in that league or I missed him. Did see that Solomon Maguire is struggling with a .179 BA, .476 OPS. He was injured and did not play much in the FCL in 2023. Heading into his age 21 season and a lot of very talented young OF's ahead of him like Shalin Polanco, Lonnie White, Jr, and Enmanuel Terrero.
