Morning Rundown: Pirates sign JT Brubaker, Baseball Prospectus releases Pirates prospects rankings
The Pirates come to terms with JT Brubaker, avoiding arbitration, Baseball Prospectus release their Pirates rankings
The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed with right-handed pitcher JT Brubaker to a one-year deal, avoiding arbitration.
Brubaker, 30, last pitched in 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery last season. He posted a 4.69 ERA (3.87 xFIP) over 144 innings pitched while posting a 1.9 WAR on FanGraphs.
He had a solid spring before the injury, and it looks like he aims to return to the majors around the All-Star break.
Today is the deadline for arbitration-eligible players to exchange numbers with their teams, Ethan will have an article out later today going over it.
Baseball Prospectus released their Top 20 prospect rankings for the Pirates on Wednesday, with the first 10 being free.
Paul Skenes came in at number one, to no surprise. Termarr Johnson came in at second, with Braxton Ashcraft fifth.
One of the bigger surprises was Jun-Seok Shim coming in at 10th. There were some interesting names to come in 11-20, but since it is behind a paywall I won’t go into details on it.

I think is fair to say that our farm system is top heavy and after the top 3-5 is anybody’s preference.
MLBTR had him projected at $2.8 mil, so very close to the $2.275 agreed to by the parties. If the rehab goes as scheduled he will be getting game ready right before the AS Break, and Burrows could be just another few weeks later, in early August. If Braxton Ashcraft gets off to a good start in 2024, he could also be ready to join the Rotation.
