Morning Rundown: Pittsburgh Pirates Trade Carlos Santana
With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Pirates made their first move, sending Carlos Santana to the Milwaukee Brewers for prospect Jhonny Severino
The Pittsburgh Pirates made the first of a few potential trades before the deadline, sending Carlos Santana to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for infield prospect Jhonny Severino.
The 37-year-old former All-Star was signed to an one-year contract during the offseason as the Pirates overhauled their first base position. It was a solid stint for Santana, who was probably always someone the team was going to try and flip at the deadline.
During his time with the Pirates, Santana slashed .235/.321/.412 with a 99 wRC+, 12 home runs and 53 RBI. Among the biggest highlights of his tenure, a walk-off home run against the team that he is heading too.
In return, the Pirates acquire the 18-year-old Severino, who was playing in the Arizona Complex League. He was immediately assigned to the FCL Pirates roster after the trade.
Severino will be an intriguing player to follow, as he has a strong arm and some power potential. At 18-years-old, he has four home runs in the ACL across just 52 plate appearances (seven total extra-base hits).
Baseball America mentions him being a ‘power hitting third baseman if everything clicks’ and thought his performance could improve with him focusing on hitting from one side of the plate.
He was a former switch-hitter, but now just bats from the right side of the plate. The hit tool wasn’t generous on BA, but he has been striking out under 20% of the time this, although he has one walk in those 52 plate appearances currently.
One of the Bradenton Marauders’ better hitters was put on the Injured List on Thursday. Outfielder Enmanuel Terrero has put together a strong season this year in Single-A, posting a 122 wRC+ currently.
Terrero has shown a strong approach at the plate, even though he can struggle a bit against lefties, and has seen a power surge each year professionally. He has hit eight home runs currently, but has also stolen 20 bases.
He missed three games two weeks ago, before also sitting out the first game of the St. Lucie series. Now he heads to the Injured List.
