Elvis Alvarado dfa'd to make room for Frazier. One more to go.

Expand full comment

I guess they figure Alvarado will go unclaimed due to his split contract.

Does Frazier or Suwinski break the .590 OPS mark in '25? Does either reach 300 at bats? Does both make the opening day roster?

My thought is 1 will, 1 will, and both will.

What will Frazier's number be 26, 12, or other?

My guess is other.

Guys what if they meant to sign Clint Frazier.

And it's actually the year 2017.

And I just ate a bunch of peyote.

Best attempt yet to explain one of BC’s moves.

That would be like us signing Jasson Dominguez today.

What I simply do not understand is why they don’t try to solve their offense problems with a TRADE. I believe it is legal in MLB to trade players for players in other organizations, young players with actual upside. Yes, you might have to actually take a risk and give up something of value, but amazing how every other organization in baseball seems capable of doing this from time to time.

This Frazier thing is really getting to me. I won’t say it’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back, because I will never give up on following this team. But for God’s sake, do something other than signing proven mediocrities and get aggressive to address your problems.

I wish they had announced this one before Pirates Fest. There might have been a riot.

The unspoken challenge here is that any hitter they brought in also had to effectively be *free*.

They *did* use pitching depth to bring in a legit chance for offensive improvement, and that hitter just so happened to be a pre-arb guy making league min.

Unless you’re trading Mitch Keller, whatever pitching they gave up pretty clearly had to return a good *cheap* bat, and I think our eyes would water at which arms that would’ve required.

Cherington was directed to slash payroll, plain and simple.

What? ? You want to trade for someone who will upgrade the team.....we just got Adam Frazier back. Nevermind he's been a waste of roster spots for 3 years now. Bob and Ben got him on the cheap....the most valuable trait the Pirates go for. This organization is an embarrassment.

I said this to a buddy last year. Why not let him hit for himself when he pitches? Wes Johnson said on a few occasions, felt Skenes could hit 20+ Homer's in the bigs. I definitely wouldn't doubt the kid

I think Frazier takes Yorke´s job out of spring training and we are still in the market for a $20mil dollar right fielder

It wouldn't be the worst thing for Yorke to get a month or two of regular ABs in AAA while waiting for the inevitable injury or struggles by one or more of Gonzales, IKF, Hayes, or Triolo.

Expand full comment

the alternative is to break camp with Bae and we have already seen how that goes

Expand full comment

Gonzales, Hayes, IKF with Triolo and Frazier as backups? Horwitz can play 2B too if they want to give Reynolds some time at 1B.

Billy Cook, Liover and Alika can play second as well. But I think we are grooming Termarr for our second baseman sometime next year.

I gotta think Yorke, Cook, Gonzalez, Peguero, Triolo and more are better options here. Maybe we can get Jesse Chavez in a trade from the Rangers or Austin Hedges from the Indians? Is Rodolfo Castro available? Falter for Castro!

SHUT UP, NERD

Expand full comment

I'm more than fine with adding Adam Frazier, if it means a farewell to Alika!

Expand full comment

Alika can be waived multiple times, and no one will claim him. He is like having an extra roster spot. Fraizer has, I believe, the right to refuse a minor-league assignment, which makes him incredibly unuseable. In fact, he is one of the most unuseable players in baseball.

Expand full comment

Moreover, Alika is the only one of 742 middle infielders on the roster who can back up SS.

Expand full comment

Triolo can back-up SS. He has 66 innings, 0 errors. Alika and Triolo are duplicative.

Expand full comment

I would have traded IKF and started Triolo at SS (only if I could not have given Hayes away to the As), but that's me.

Don't say anything about Triolo at SS on this forum though. Certain people will get angry.

I think Triolo would be an average or better fielder at every position other than the battery.

The Reds have agreed to a one-year, $5MM deal with outfielder Austin Hays, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. He can earn another $1MM via incentives.———- Ben sleeping again. Frazier(Really). OUCH!!!

Expand full comment

I was hoping for Hays or Grichuk as I think we're a little lefty heavy, at least when it comes to power. Maybe we'll sign Grichuk.

Signing Hays took the Reds payroll to $110 MM, or about $30MM more than their upstream neighbors.

Signing Frazier makes me feel like a trade is coming. This signing alone doesn’t make much sense.

If he’s expected to be a utility bench piece, then fine I guess. If he’s somehow expected to be the starting right fielder next year, then yikes.

Expand full comment

I wouldn't mind seeing them send Suwinski to the White Sox where he'd likely get playing time back in his hometown. And I'd guess Bae would have some trade value with a team thinking you can't teach speed and who knows what he might do when you get him into a new development system.

OTOH, maybe a fresh start with Hague will lead to another opportunity with the Pirates.

Expand full comment

Yeah they needed a lefty bat but man is this a low impact bat. I love Frazier but I hope this doesn’t indicate he’s gonna be playing a lot.

I hope your right about a trade is coming. Hopefully for Taylor Ward!

Expand full comment

Frazier hit .206 against right-handed pitching last year and .172 against lefties. Ouch.

Expand full comment

Yes but on the other he hand also clearly failed the eye test.

Expand full comment

Damn stats.

Expand full comment

So he doesn’t need to be platooned!

Expand full comment

Yeah that’s terrible with no power too. Maybe last year was just a down year and he can return to a 90-100 OPS+ hitter. Not holding my breath. Would love a real impact signing but they keep taking up 40 Man spots with guys that aren’t real good.

Expand full comment

Against righties he hit .248 in both 2022 and 2023. We need to go back to 2021 for his last good year, where he hit .317 against righties. Oh well.

Expand full comment

We are approaching “boycott” territory, ugh!

realistically, Frazier is better than Suwinski and Palacios

or maybe they want to delay Nick Yorke´s service time

Expand full comment

And the Reds signed Hays, Frazier or Hays which one would’ve made sense for us?🤔

Expand full comment

The Pirates are so myopic in their roster building/management, it’s all about upfront cost. I didn’t even particularly like Hayes, but he could have made sense in a platoon with JS. Adam Frazier makes absolutely no fucking sense to me, zero! He will be 34, and he’s almost five years removed from putting up even a respectable xwOBA.
