With the M's trading Suarez, they may be in the market for a third baseman, but probably someone with more certainty than Triolo. Perhaps Triolo could be part of a bigger deal, something like Triolo, Bae, Mlod, Harrington for Woo, which comes out as even on Baseball Trade Values trade simulator (fwiw; I often don't agree with their trade values). The M's get their 3B, a utility player, a bullpen piece, and a pitcher to develop while we get a rotation piece.
That group might or something close would probably get Manoah. I like Woo but think he might end up in the bullpen, each time I've watched him (only twice), his control was iffy at best. One of the games was in Cincinnati and the ballpark might have played a part the other was in Texas and that team might have lol.
If there was any realistic expectation that he could stay healthy and play CF then his price would be astronomical, if not then hes probably just an expensive, though quality, DH
Lynn and that contract make me either want to “bump up” a grade in expectations and move up from $12m for giolito and look more $20m Eduardo Rodriguez AAV, or wait to snag multiple guys who aren’t starters like in previous years . Don’t get stuck in no Lynn land
Gibby wouldve been nice to snag imo, lynn supposedly has a good arm slot to enter our sweeper training but im not upset about missing out on him. I am slightly worried that the aggressive teams might get deals done early and I feel as though we tend to wait and see who falls, which isn't the mindset I love if we are actually trying to go for something this year
Cherington’s unaltered practice has been to target guys who want roles as regulars and can’t get them elsewhere. Anderson, Q and Hill, at best, would all have had to compete for rotation spots anywhere else. Santana and Hedges would have had to take backup jobs.
This offseason is when we see whether this FO has any intention of joining the major leagues. They don’t need three more Hills. They need actual good starters. If Cherington remains unwilling to compete for talent with real major league teams, he won’t be producing any contenders.
When I read this it made me think that in general, our FO needs more conviction. Identify the pitchers we want and go after them. Identify the 2B prospect with the highest upside and play him everyday until he gets a season's worth of ABs. Decide whether Davis is an OF or C; decide whether Bae (and Marcano before him) is an IF or OF, ...
OTOH, and to be fair, there is so much uncertainty in baseball that remaining open-minded can also be seen as a positive...there's a large group of pitchers that have similar upsides, why not wait and save some money that (in theory) could be used to address other weaknesses? Rotate among 2B prospects until someone claims the position. Don't close the door on Davis playing a more valuable position; develop Bae as a super-utility player given his broad skillset...
I see your point, I feel like the wait and see what falls to us method is fine for rebuilding/retooling years. I feel like this year should be setting a new precedent and I would love if that came with a new attitude, something along the lines of, "we know who we want and we are going to go fucking get them"
I was also going to respond about the 2B position. Castro started at 2B for the Pirates in 2023 and was doing well. When Cruz was injured we moved Castro to SS where he began making a lot of errors and the bat fell apart also - he was benched then eventually unloaded to Philly. Gonzales was given the opportunity and played decent defense at 2B, but his bat was nowhere near MLB-ready with 36 K's/6 BB's in 115 AB, .209 Avg, 616 OPS. He was sent back down to AAA. Marcano and Bae were next up and both did OK at 2B, but Bae's worth was more as a backup CF, and Marcano was good (17 EBH in 202 AB), but was injured and never was able to come back - he was not placed on the 40 and lost to SD (?) earlier this off-season.
The two that did the best around the IF were Liover Peguero and Jared Triolo. Peguero is a year or two younger than all of the rest, played well defensively at SS and 2B and hit for more power (7 HR in 198 AB, .654 OPS). Triolo was called up to replace the injured Hayes at 3B, and made the best of his promotion playing very well at 3B, and then at all of the other IF positions when Hayes returned. He also did well at the plate, hitting for a slash of 298/388/398/786 OPS, and I think an fWAR of 1.7.
Peguero and Triolo are the two I say stepped up and claimed their spots in the IF of the Pirates going into ST 2024. I was hoping that either Bae or Gonzales or both could be used in a trade to secure a SP or a possible CF Prospect. That's 2024, but whoever plays 2B in 2024 better be aware that TJ could be banging on the door for 2B for the Pirates to start 2025! His numbers with the bat have been very impressive for such a young ballplayer, and we could see him in AA by mid-season, 2024.
Well considering we are pretty much a lock to win the division this year (in my own fantasy land) then davis could have a pretty decent chance at catching lol
Maybe BC will just go for the island of misfits.
Trade for Manoah
Sign Bauer
Sign the usual lefty Paxton
another cheap gamble is Madison Bumgarner
any free agent that you have not heard a rumor about is a free agent that we can afford
https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb-rumors-madison-bumgarners-diamondbacks-211205669.html
Going to throw out a completely unrealistic idea, try for Yamamoto.
3 year $100 million
Year 1 $40 million
Year 2 $35 million
Year 3 $25 million
Then pray he's healthy!
It would be a huge change to the culture and be totally off the radar of the rest of the league.
It would allow Yoshi to hit free agency again under his age 30 season, with a ton already banked.
By the time hes a FA, we would be getting ready to extend or arb some of our (hopeful) big arms that will have been self developed
If they could sneak into the playoffs, the pirates would have a fairly potent pitching staff on paper lol.
what are everyone´s thoughts on Byron Buxton?
Twins looking to shed payroll
Would really like to gamble on Buxton as a right handed centerfielder and Kirriloff as left handed first baseman
think we can land these two dudes at half of their salary for some of our grade B prospects
With the Jays needing a 3bmen, would they take Triolo and a lesser prospect for Manoah and Biggio?

This would be a pretty sexy move for both teams imo, filling some holes of need with a mix of floor and upside
want to expand that deal to include Vlad
we cant expand that far.
Change of scenery deal - Manoah for Contreas, straight up...who says no?
sources say yes
If there was any realistic expectation that he could stay healthy and play CF then his price would be astronomical, if not then hes probably just an expensive, though quality, DH
i chalk him up to another gamble
if his knee recovered it is a steal because of the unknown of whether his kneee recovered
cutch´s knee recovered
Just remembered that they also just extended him so probs less likely that they would move him
my latest “realistic” FA SP wishlist:
(FG crowdsource contract estimate)
Michael Wacha (3/$39mil)
Luis Severino (1/$10)
Wade Miley (1/$8)
Alex Wood (1/$7)
We should target mason miller and bring him to the burgh to pair with bednar as a all-yinzer back of the pen

We can keep him happy with his scrap heap ways as long as he jumps at the opportunity to secure a few legitimate major leaguers first!

I think the Pirates have a better chance of winning the Central in '24 than Davis getting regular time behind the dish.
I think they did rotate multiple 2b prospects over the last 2-3 years and none of them claimed it.
I also think they tried to develop Bae as SU...he just didn't perform.

I would’ve taken Gibson at that price. Not Lynn.
