At the risk of seeing what I want to see, tell me that adjusting with two strikes to stay back and pull a changeup over the fence and then slash a fastball oppo for an RBI from a kid who is still newly-20 years old shouldn't make Pirate fans very excited.
One of the most impressive swings was one he didn't take in his 3rd at bat. He checked the swing with the same load and release as the prior foul ball. I couldn't believe he totally stopped it after that (would need a side view to be totally sure) but it sure looked like a check from the camera angle. Then took ball 4 on a pitch that looked close but definitely off the outside edge.
The ground out to second during his 4th at bat was a rocket, if he would have got it elevated, most likely outcome would have been extra bases. (105mph off the bat against a lefty).
Termarr had 4 really good at bats, stinks he got a cramp in his last at bat. Thankfully it was just a cramp.
I'm going to my first AFL game tonight in Scottsdale and was specifically hoping to see Termarr. Oh well. Tickets for all AFL games are a great deal -- $11 (for seniors) and seeing some of the best young players in the game. I suggest avoiding the day games, tho. Hot as blazes down here.
Fast track for him would be Indy. It'd take a monster spring, though. Actually, no, it wouldn't. It would've been scheduled the day after they drafted him.
I’d tend to think if something like Padres-Tigers happen that the large markets will howl and we will see another format change. Truth be told, that would work both ways as well: expand to 8, revenues go up, you’ll have 80 win teams making it, and the byes go away. Satisfies the largest markets all the way down to Nutting, who will find playoff revenue more easily accessible with an $80 million payroll
My hope is expand to 32, have four eight team divisions (Clemente, Robinson, Ruth, Suzuki). Reduce the regular season to 156 games. Playoffs stay as is…except instead of a 2 of 3 format, it’s a single game playoff between 5/6 seeds, then a two or three from the winner at the 4 seed. All series after that are four of seven. Top seed gets 5 of 7 home games in all series till the World Series.
Too bad because I love the concept. Pirates would be able to renew their old rivalries with the Phils, Mets, Nats. Of course they would probably be placed in the Midwest division with all the teams New York doesn’t care about.
Johnson was interviewed after the game and said that it was just a cramp. He went as far as saying that he would be available tonight, though you'd have to imagine that he won't be out there for at least one game. No one plays all 30 games anyway. Last year's league leader played 25 games, so might as well give Johnson off today.
I won't start calling him the next Jose Tabata yet, but this certainly reminds me of Tabata, when he would get hurt and you would swear his season was done from his reaction, but then he played 2-3 days later. If memory serves me correct, Tabata had cramping problems that made it look like a sniper took him out mid-run towards first base a few times
May have nothing to do with this situation, but I’d rather have a guy who’s real about whether he’s OK to go than hurt the team. If you have major league players on the bench (well, Cherington . . .) it’s usually your best chance to win.
The Pirate prospects announced their presence with authority in the AFL last night. Both Sammy Siani and Termarr Johnson homered, and both had 2 hits. TJ had 2 RBI and Siani 1, and Kristian Curtis got the Win with 3 innings of no-hit relief that also included 2 K's/0 BB. Eddie Yean came on to Close it out in the 9th, finishing the game, but gave up a run on 2 Hits in the process. For the most part, a very positive way to start the AFL season.
Curtis, a 6'5" 210 pound RHSP was a 12th Rounder in the 2023 draft. He had a positive first season at Bradenton this year, starting 16 games, 75.1 IP, 81 K/39 BB. Curtis was not one of the Top 40 Prospects by Fangraphs in 2024, but they recognized him as a "Sleeper Arm". They also mentioned he had a botched TJ while at Texas A&M, then transferred to Arizona State where he showed plus velo.

Curtis had a problem where stitches were left in, or something like that, and he needed another procedure. I think it had some lasting impact on feeling in his hand. Anthony would know better.
Considering his medical history, he’s made good progress. Strikes me as similar to Reed but more velo, but he poops out after two usually. Nice if he could go 4-5 some in AZ but that’s not the routine there.
RN I’m hoping for the center to shift south. You want to be north of the center. Of course, that means Ft Myers gets hammered and our nephew lives there. You can’t win with this shit.
Best of luck for all involved. Florida gets hammered somewhere every year. Has happened well before any of us here were born and will happen well after all of us are gone. Sucks… Godspeed and keep us updated as you can.

love that mel, thanks for adding!
i know i know it's just the AFL, but boy...
The ball certainly carries there, BUT
All of that was impressive regardless.
I’ve seen glimpses all year. Just about finding consistency

Nice!
This feels like the most mid version of the Padres clubs this decade so of course they'll finally break through. I love baseball.
Pete Alonso's makin' himself some MONEY.
3 oppo HRs during the reg sea
3 oppo HRs during the playoffs
Blows my mind watching Anthony Banda pitching leverage in the playoff for the LA Dodgers and doing it well!
Absolutely looked at the box score this morning and said to myself THAT Anthony Banda?!
The Baseball Gods are smiling on Anthony this season.
Termarr is on the fast track? what are the odds he break camp with the team in April? More than zero?
Less than zero.

had a monster spring last year
guess we give Peguero two months at it and then look at it again in June
Who plays SS? Who plays 2B? Can any of them play OF?
i would think that if Peguero fails in April/May, they would just dfa him
Nick and Yorke at second base with IKF and Triolo there in a pinch
I think Peguero was given another option, not entirely sure.
I don’t know about you guys, but I love it when the Dodgers lose. Padres vs Tigers like it’s 1984 again would be just fine with me.
Not sure who I love more to lose…..the Dodgers or the Yanks. Rooting and for the Pads and the Royals to win their series this week.
Odd thing about the games last night. Dodgers put up 5 runs in the 3rd. They had only one hit after that.
I want to see the steam coming out of Manfred’s ears.
I want to live to see a WS between the Peoria Peapods and the Intercourse Unmentionables.

Oh and this will never happen.

Yep and you’d keep the Reds rivalry too, as they’d move to the East too.

Get that kid some Brondo! It has electrolytes.
It’s what plants crave.
I guess it’s Brawndo…
Mustard! Drink it up!!!

Wilbur, praying you and yours make it through this week without any lasting impact.
Goes for anyone else reading this and their loved ones who are in Milton’s path.

Yeah, except now we've had four 100-year storms in five years.
Maybe after this one there will be no more bad ones in your lifetime. Should be good for 400 years now…. Good luck!!!
