Some last minute free agent signings
Baseball is back!
Pitchers and catchers officially report to Spring Training today. The Pirates will have their first team workout the following Monday and their first Spring Training game on February 22.
Our latest podcast episode looked at some of the prospects that will be attending major league camp. We finish up with some players/storylines we are watching this spring.
The first bit of news has already dropped before anything has officially begun. First baseman Spencer Horwitz will miss time with a wrist injury, according to Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
He had surgery on the wrist and is still in a cast as of Tuesday.
Horwitz was acquired in the offseason via a trade that sent Luis Ortiz, Michael Kennedy, and Josh Hartle.
The Los Angeles Angels have signed right-handed pitcher Kenley Jansen to a one-year contract worth $10 million.
Jansen, 37, spent the first 12 seasons of his major league career in Los Angeles with the Dodgers. He spent a year with the Braves in 2012 before playing the last two with the Boston Red Sox.
He’s posted a 2.57 ERA with 447 saves in over 800 games played.
Former Pirate Michael A. Taylor signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox that is worth $1.95 million. After a career-high 21 home runs in 2023 with the Minnesota Twins, Taylor hit just five in 2024 with the Pirates and posted the worst wRC+ of his career (50).
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed utilityman Enrique Hernandez to a one-year deal worth $6.5 million. He hit 12 home runs last year playing for the Dodgers while playing every position except for right field (including 4.1 innings on the mound).

One good bit of news: Dauri Moreta threw a short bullpen.
This is ominous: Hayes said he feels good, but not 100%. With the back, he doesn't expect ever to feel 100% again.
