I had previously done some back of the napkin service time math, that Henry Davis needed 31 days of service time to accrue a full year. Starting from today's game, assuming he stays on the team the rest of the year, I think he will be 3 days of service time over to accrue a full year.

Can someone check my math on this? I know that we need a catcher, but shouldn't we have just brought Delay up for a week and then bring up Davis??? Someone tell me I'm missing something.

Definitely easy to root for him. Except tonight of course.

Went to the game Saturday. Had a great time. Was close enough to the field to let my son, Oneil, know that I love him. I spoke Spanish to him. It was a great moment. At least it was for me. Now to the serious stuff. It's one thing to lack talent. It's totally another to lack fundamentals. BDLC made the same mistake twice Saturday night giving the base runner a free base. MAT did it yesterday. In all three cases, the Reds benefited with runs. This isn't middle school baseball. Serious question: do these guys practice during the season? Do they work on specific situations? These were not unique situations. They were typical baseball plays.

Don’t know what these guys do during the season. What I do know is that, in the 20-odd years I’ve been going to ML and MiL spring training, there’s been a sharp drop in the number of drills being run since BC took over.

The first yellow flag for me after the new regime was installed was an article (I think by Mackey) that quoted players being thrilled with how much earlier they were finishing drills in spring training so that they could go play golf, etc. It was framed as not wasting time just to fill up a morning. But I had to wonder if there weren't going to be negative consequences. Who knows if players still have that perception (by now, though, only a few players like Reynolds, Hayes, and Keller would remember what things had been like before)? Of course when the season finally got started, Shelton said on more than one occasion that his job was to keep things fun.

I'm all for streamlined workouts and having fun, but that needs to be accompanied with sound fundamentals.

So.. in the name of 'To Tell the Truth'.. who is the real Javier? Are 'we' optimistic or pessimistic on his outlook.

Does optimistically hopeful count? He only turns 22 in a week, so there's time, and it's progress to see him hitting some. He's one of really love to see click. The defense alone makes one want it to work out.

Yeah, he just needs to average out the crazy stuff. The D is so good that average-ish offense would get him to the fringes at least. Certainly better than Alika. (Check Alika’s defensive metrics for a surprise. He’s the IF variant of Nichols’ Law of Catcher Defense.)

wait, wait, wait...

"Nichols' Law of Catcher Defense?"

I'll need an explanation, please.

The worse a catcher hits, the better his defensive rep.

Going to be a nice litmus test for Johnson. They'll come at him in AA

Rough August, would've been flying hi to get the nod heading into the second half, but I'm happy they let him mature. Stoked to see how he handles better stuff.

Bart is listed at 238 lbs. I called this hammy here on BoD just a couple days ago. Is Shelton watching the games? Is the trainer in the dugout watching the games? A guy of his size shouldn't be busting it down the line like he's being timed in the 40 at the NFL combine. Of course love the hustle but you could see this coming a mile away.

The coaches bear some responsibility.

Expand full comment

I'll join the others, this is a big stretch (pun intended) regarding responsibility. If we are worried about his hammy's then we need to make him a DH yesterday. I can put it on the coaches if he felt issues and they kept him in the game, but big people with big hammys run hard all the time and if he can't, then he and the trainers need to work on better stretching and prep.

Too many commenters blame the 26 man roster for everything. There's a deep bench of alleged professionals supporting the 26. From trainers to skill development to sports counseling, to strategy/analytics people. Did someone talk to Bart? A question that would reveal my concern. This was easy to see, Bae or Michael A. can run down the line like a sprint at a track meet......Joey should not.....this is pretty simple concept, not high level.

Expand full comment

We'll just agree to disagree. I don't see how the size of hamstring (or person) makes them more or less likely to have issues. Skinny runners also pull hammy's. If it is communicating (knowing the status of the player) then that is true for all players. I'd argue Bryan Reynolds (the most complete offensive player) has the most important hammy's, so should he not run hard?

Wow.

I know you're not *one of those guys* but this is one of their takes...

Expand full comment

I'm certainly no fan of this coaching staff, but putting a hustle related hamstring injury on them is a bit of a reach. It happens.

Expand full comment

It shouldn't have happenned, someone needed to tell Bart to go 90% down the line and the reason why. You would never encourage guys like Rowdy, Grandal or Bart to sprint in the manner Bart has been doing so. Big guys, big muscle guys don't need to be in an all-out sprint all the time. This is Coaching 101.

Expand full comment

Hard disagree. Effort is the one thing you control. THAT is coaching 101.

The problem is someone who isn't used to the effort with a sudden change to give 110%..

I feel like my ol' high school sports shirt saying is appropriate here, on multiple aspects of the Pirates. 'Practice as you Play, Play as your Practice'.

Expand full comment

This board must not be watching the games. Bart was trying to catch Usain Bolt going down the line. It was problematic, but you would have to have an understanding about such effort.

BR says that Termarr was born in 2004 and therefore is already 20. Still impressive that he's made it to AA, and after what he did in ST I'm predicting that he's going to rise to this challenge and may even look better than he did in A+.

Expand full comment

Remains hilarious to me that a 20 yo with a 30th percentile strikeout rate has become known for striking out too much.

Expand full comment
author

I do question how precise it is, but the issue isn't so much strikeout rate as it is the swing and miss in his game. Fangraphs has him at a 13.8% swinging strike rate, and then TJ Stats has him with a 31.7 Whiff%, and 74.5 zone contact%. Those are problematic, and could lead to a higher strikeout rate in Double-A

Yeah, it's awesome lol but still trying to understand some of the quirks to his particular grading system. Cause (slight embellishment coming) you might see a Bubba FF Stuff+ of 110 on TJ, but then Eno has him at like a 140 Stuff+ lol

Glad to see the Pirates move TJ to AA. I thought that should have been the move coming out of ST, but no big deal. As it turned out with the injury to Jack Brannigan, TJ was able to play a lot of both SS and 2B for the GBO Grasshoppers. BTW, he turned 20 in June of 2024. Kervin Pichardo (trade from SD for Wolf) played a lot of MI at Altoona and is still only 22.

Thankfully, the effort of Luis Ortiz did not go unrewarded. The Pirate Rotation of Keller, Skenes, Jones, Falter, and Ortiz has been worth 8.8 fWAR to date (Value ~ $70.4 mil) and 4 of them are making league minimum! Bubba Chandler and Thomas Harrington on the near horizon, and Johan Oviedo possibly ready to return from TJ by the start of the 2025 season. Oviedo started 32 games for the Pirates in 2023, 177.2 IP, 4.31 ERA, 1.9 fWAR.
